Engineering has always been considered an exceptional major throughout the history. It combines various human characteristics and brings out their scientific and leadership skills. It is one of the few majors that are known for their intellectual challenges and tough problem solving situations. However, with all the scientific and technological advancements in the field of engineering, the controversy of whether or not females can work in this field and handle all its tough requirements. This issue of the masculinity of engineering and few other professions create an ethical dilemma. Do the old cultural traditions and beliefs regarding females lack in skills and capabilities to deal with tough situations create what lately came to be known as a “gender gap” in the engineering profession? What females lack in physical strength they make up for it creativity and dedication, which are two of many important skills that qualifies an individual require to be an Engineer. It was also shown that women work harder to compensate or overcome their minority status by endeavoring for high achievements [2]. With their high dedication level women maintain their excellent qualifications in check and always work hard to maintain a higher status.
From the above analysis and reasoning of the gender gap in engineering issue, we could safely presume that the low numbers of females engineers can be primarily related to external factors that affect the public’s view of the engineering major and in turn manipulating women to change their minds and avoid a career in engineering even if they have what it takes to be successful
