Gender Differences In The Military

Women in today’s society are viewed as more equal to men than before, but women are still viewed as different than men in important and various ways. Most of the inequalities that still exist today are a result of basic human biological sex differences that cannot be changed, and this plays a large part in the reason women and men are given different positions and ranks in the armed forces. For example, females tend to be weaker by nature than their male counterparts as they physically have less muscle mass and are lighter boned. Females also have physically smaller brains than men. These differences and others like them have created sex differences in the work force that cannot be undone, as they are not created in society but by nature. (Goffman & Zaidman, 1977) Whenever it comes to the armed forces, women are regarded as equal to males, but they are not physically suited to have the same jobs. Specifically, females should not be drafted into the military similar to their male counterparts as they are generally not built to handle that type of intense combat. Though sexual assault in the military has decreased in recent years, women are still being assaulted at an unusually high rate by both enemy and their own personal troops (Chinkin, 1994). Additionally, while both men and women are perpetrators of rape, women in the military faced more sexual assault on average. They are also more likely to experience long-term emotional and physical health decreases and a lower quality of life (Sadler, 2000).
