ANALYSIS , INTEPREETATION AND DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS:
Question1:What is your gender?
55% of participants who competed the questionnaires were male and 45% were female. This provided a spread of opinions on the topic across both genders.
Question 2:What grade are you currently in?
18% of the participants were in Grade 10 and Grade 11and 64% were Grade 12 students, All participants would have participated in sport for some, particularly those in the grade 12 group , so they will be able to provide informed opinions on the research topic.

This suggests that awards do have an impact on the participants and can influence them negatively. The figure skating communications organizations states whatever the goal of an athlete, motivation influences the success or failure of an individual's performance, which results in the loss or gain of self-confidence/ Merryman (2017) claims that although we must focus our attention on the consistency of the athlete, constant awards improve self-esteem, and, once athletes have high self-esteem, they will achieve …show more content…
This suggests that participants deserve an award whether it be a badge or trophy, to ensure that the sports participants feel like they spend their time doing something worthwhile. The San Diego Figure Skating Organization stated that many athletes lose self motivation and self confidence when they not recognized and they therefore decide to give up that sport rather than pushing harder. Parker Albate(2016) says he believes that young athletes should receive trophies for winning and certificates or small trophies for participation.
Question 12:Do you feel that sports awards should only be given to top player/s who come first, second or third?
60% of the participants agreed and 40% disagreed. This suggests that receiving an award holds a higher prestige if you made top 3, therefore enhancing the value of the award rather than letting the award lose its value. Betty Berdan (2010) states that when awards are handed out like candy to every child who participates, the awards diminish in value , this indicated a strong point as the perception of receiving an award is prestigious and not just something to give away. This links to the aim of this research which was to determine the perceptions of high school students when it comes to accepting your award.
