On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. During one year, this equates to more than ten million women and men. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. These statistics do not account for the other types of domestic violence including emotional and economical abuse.(ncadv.org) Between 21-60% of victims of intimate partner violence lose their jobs due to reasons stemming from violence in the household, this accounts for a lost of $8.3 billion a year, in total.…
with the solution of an abusive relationship the author argues in her other book The Verbally Abusive Man--Can He Change, A Woman’s Guide to Deciding Whether to Stay or Go that change is essential ( 221). She gives emotional support for those too who are in a destructive partner-relationship by providing her suggestions on how to find a suitable solution. Most abusive men (could be woman as well), as she argues have created kind and admirable personas and have an "affable demeanor" therefore it is extremely hard to leave them (221). They fool everybody in their near surrounding, but behind the curtains they act differently and apply strong performative forces (221).…

Feminist consciousness raising groups, social workers, women’s advocates and therapists have already done the difficult work of de-pathologizing women’s responses to violence and abuse. Where a therapist without an understanding of VAW might identify Nadia’s “symptoms” (suicidal ideation, depression) as the presenting concerns and attempt to treat Nadia individually, a therapist working from a feminist or relational perspective would rightly identify Nadia’s symptoms as commonly occurring responses to living with violence or abuse. If I were working with Nadia, I might wonder about how to attend to the imminence of both, suicidal ideation and the potential for violence being directed at Nadia from people other than herself. Do individual “symptoms”…
Researchers believe this is because women are more likely to experience rape or sexual abuse than men. About 50% of women in the U.S are likely to experience a traumatic events but 1 out of 5 women become PTSD victims. Lisa M. Najavits says that out of the males with PTSD 52% have an alcohol disorder and 35% have a drug disorder. While it is 28% and 27% for women. In addition, there has been almost three times more female reported victims than male reported victims (Statistics Canada, 2014). Even though there are more reported female victims, it is imperative to not forget that there are male victims and these victims deserve recognition. Most individuals believe that it is inconceivable for a male to be abused by their partners, and this is where my research comes in.…
Men are often expected to be assertive and dominant, while women are often portrayed as vulnerable and emotional. These gender roles suggest that men are more likely than women to turn to aggression during times of anger, which has correlation to abuse against their female partners (Campbell and Muncer 286). As a result of domestic violence, women often suffer from mental and health problems such as chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, eating disorders, diabetes, asthma, and if the abuse is severe enough, even death (Tremer). Although there are already certain programs and laws that exist to help women who have experienced domestic and sexual abuse such as the Violence Against Women Act, women’s rights activists work to change traditional gender roles, educate women on how to prevent or cope with abuse, and provide support groups for individuals and families that have been victimized by abuse (Zimmerman, et al.…

Another major cause of violence is psychological abuse which refers to emotional and mental abuse. This type of violence forces the victim to be a dangerous abuser and it happens frequently in situations of power imbalance. Also, the victims of this type of violence typically develop different symptoms such as: anxiety, chronic depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychological abuse is the most difficult type of abuse because it can cause more emotional pain than physical abuse and much longer lasting effects. Also, this type of abuse leads the victims to be depressed or isolated because victims experienced a lot of negative consequences and low self-esteem.…
The Mental Health of Men Introduction Throughout history, men have been seen as superior in all ways to women, and this harmful stereotype still plays a role in today’s society. However, it wasn’t until recent times that the idea of mental disorders and health has been feminized and men’s mental health has largely been ignored (1). When referring to mental disorders and health, this is an encompassing term that refers to both affective and behavioral disorders that are patterned in both men and women (1). Although there has been some debate throughout history about empirical mental differences between men and women, it is proven that both sexes are capable of being diagnosed with the same mental disorders. Male and female victims…

Coercive control is when a partner keeps you away from your friends or family. They control your conversations and who you can see and they make decision for you and they track your movements by demanding to know every step and move you take. The abusers will threaten to physically harm you and they will convince you that they will hurt themselves by committing suicide if you do not comply with them. They will threaten to take your children away from you so, to prevent you from leaving him. They will also threaten to harm a pet.…
Both men and women suffer greatly from abuse whether it be verbal, emotional, physical or financial abuse. Intimate partner violence is usually referred to as domestic violence, which is a real world problem since the dawn of time. When abuse is spoken of usually the first gender to come into someone’s mind is a female and not a male, but in all reality anyone can be a victim of abuse. Battered men and/or women are beings who feel that they are in danger or are in a life threatening situation and the only two choices are to kill or be killed, their lives are on the line. Their self-defense instincts kick in and they act on it and sometimes that results in the death of the abuser.…
