What is gender inequality? A person’s idea of gender inequality can be drastically different from someone else’s. Gender inequality is the concept that men and women should not be treated the same. This brings up another political movement that is known as feminism. However, people tend to have the wrong idea about feminism. Feminism is the idea that women are equal to men, not superior to them. There are many ways to experience feminism. A misogynist is a man who thinks he is better than a woman. This is due to the fact that during the story he constantly puts down Mrs. Hale and his wife. This is evident when he mocks the women about the quilt by saying, “They wonder if she was going to quilt it or just knot it” (Glaspell 985). Given the fact that Sheriff Peters could not careless about the quilt, he is judging the women. He is teasing the women because he believes the quilt is a trifle. Mr. Peters starts out by, “Well, can you beat the woman! Held for murder and worryin' about her preserves” (Glaspell 982). Again, this proves that the sheriff thinks that he is superior to the women. Sheriff Peters shows in several scenes that he is not concerned about the little things that the women are constantly worrying about. He believes that they are working themselves up over nothing important. Peters tunes out the women because he thinks they are no help to him in the solving the case.
