Family can be described by many different concepts from a sociological perspective. Since no two families are equally the same, it tends to be tricky applying some notions learned in class towards your individual family. When analyzing my family from a sociological perspective, there were five concepts that best associates to what defines my family. These five concepts are identifying with a social class, gender roles learned within the family, concerted cultivation childhood, parents’ time with their children and cohabitation before marriage.

Gender roles is identify as “Different sets of behaviors commonly exhibited by men and women” (Torr 2015c) often learned from socialization.“Socialization is the process by which one learns the ways of a given society/social group in order to function in it” (Torr 2015c). In my biological family gender roles were taught at an early age within the home and from socialization among fictive kin and society. Gender roles did change in my family around the age of two, when my mother enter the workforce, since my father’s income become insufficient to support a wife, two daughters, and a son. Therefore my family changed from the traditional functionalist perspective. A “functionalist perspective focuses on stability and cooperation. Based on the breadwinner-homemaker model” (Torr 2015d). My parents shared household and child care roles equally, by my father working in the morning and my mother working early evening and weekend shifts. The gender roles shift a little when my siblings and I become old enough to take on responsibilities to help in the household chores. Cohabitation is “the sharing of a household by unmarried persons who have a sexual relationship” (Torr 2015b). There are five main reason couples cohabit, which are “having enough money, ability to pay for a “real” wedding, achieving a set of financial goals before marriage, male partner’s capacity to be an economic provider” (Smock 2013:148). Also, “home ownership is often part of the desired package. Owning a home is an important prerequisite for marriage” (Smock 2013:152). A continue appearing predicament in cohabitation is “low and moderate income families in the Unites States have less protection against the vagaries of the labor market. Globalization of production and the automation of production have jointly hit Americans without college education hard” (Cherlin 2013:76). “Computer-based automation and communication have reduced the number of what economists call routine jobs-those that require some skill but not a college education” (Cherlin 2013:77). For this reason across all aspects of my different families, there have been times where the nuclear family had to be adjusted for a short while.
