I consider myself an open minded person for the most when it comes to learning new things. My gaze has been reframed to understanding the stereotypes of other and paying attention to things that usually wouldn’t think twice about. Patriarchy is one term that really stood out to be because I never question the authority of a man to that certain extend. Men perceive us as this standard we have to meet in order to be a real woman, or just beautiful in general. I become more aware of all these struct¬ures in which keeps us woman in their place and not being able to stand up. This is like in Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg, where Jess knew she was different, but did not want to stand out. “I didn’t want to be different. I longed to be everything grownups wanted, so they would love me. I followed all their rules, tried my best to please…” (Feinberg, 13). She couldn’t express herself and tried to please everybody. The standards that sociality has built of what a real woman has to be is seen in The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. “ Today a woman must ignore her reflection in the eyes of her lover, since he might admire her, and seek it in the gaze of the God of Beauty, in whose perception she is never complete” (Wolf, 85). Men are the ones who are seen with power, head of the house, the decision maker the list is never ending. We see it even in our government, every president has been male. The image of a man is seen as strong, insightful and authoritative. While men have that image, woman are seen as moody, weak and innocent. There is no winning this game, men will always have the upper hand while woman stand next to them.
My father is an example of patriarchy in my life. Although my family consist of woman, my dad still has the power. We could get into agreements and disagree with each other on my decisions on doing things, but whatever he says stands. My father believes as he is the only house he can control everything my sisters and I do. I always had to stay at home and take care of my sisters and clean as well. I had to learn at a young age how to cook and clean which I thought was for like basic skills. Once my father told me I had to learn so I can be a good wife, it made me question are learning how to clean and cook the only qualities that matter to a man.
