Gender: Binary And Nonbinary

I chose the topic of Gender: Binary and Nonbinary because I’m a transgender male student repeatedly coming out to whoever I meet on a nearly daily basis.Through research I learned that in past cultures such as Ancient Egyptians, some eastern cultures, and Native Americans do not just have the binary genders but also other non conformative gender roles that may be foreign to western cultures. Some youth in the LGBT community find it difficult to come out due to others that may not understand. I have decided to explain and make simpler of a foreign or difficult terms for gender identities for a mutual understanding in everyday society. Gender is a perception of one’s self. Many people such as: homosexuals, drag queens, and trans women in poorer communities were persecuted by police. This started the Gay Rights Movement and was the first Gay Pride. One of the leaders of these riots was Sylvia Rivera, an American gay liberatian, a transgender activists, and a drag queen. In Indonesia, instead of two genders they have five, a “metagender” society. The two binary that we know: male and female as well as biological men that present as women and vice versa, they are known as the calalai and calabai. The fifth is known as the bissu and are a combination of all the genders mentioned previously. The Native American culture has a concept they refer to as “two-spirited” where they feel they have the spirit of both men and women as well as individuals who still self-identify as their born gender.The binary roles would be male and female, although some people may have some tradition qualities from their gender roles and others that are typically the opposite. Again there are more terms but in the beginning only mentioning five different possible gender identities is a lot. Some trans people may still conform to certain gender roles to be taken more seriously by society. Like, trans woman wearing makeup even though people of all genders and reasons wear it to distinguish, enhance, or emphasize their features. The same applies to a trans man while wearing a skirt, more traditionally feminine clothing, and applying make up. Clothing is gender neutral and it depends on the individual wearing them how they interpret their own identity and self-expression.
Some may still be nonbinary, a non nonconforming gender with qualities might or might not apply to either gender roles. Nonbinary and transgender are two different things. Transgender individuals typically feel more comfortable as the opposite gender then the one assigned at birth whereas nonbinary people might dismiss them
