Simply, gender bias is a favoritism behavior toward one gender versus another (Rothchild, n.d.). The issue with gender bias is that it…
In the article titled “Face-Off on the playing Field,” Judith B. Stamper explorers the issue of female athletes competing on traditional boys’ sports teams. First, stamper explains how opponents argue that girls are not aggressive enough. They say that playing contact sports like football and wrestling put girls at risk of serious physical harm. The author also reports that some male athletes are uncomfortable having physical contact with girls. Some boys feel that it is wrong or ungentlemanly to be aggressive toward girls.…
It was Saturday lunchtime. The hot summer sun beat down on the faces of the families in the stands during the last Little League game of the season. Moms, finding comfort in the familiar faces of friends forged through three months of uncomfortable green bleachers, bee stings and sunburns, chatted casually about the back-to-school sales for the upcoming year. A handful of men, still intently focused on the games, paced by the backstop, shouting advice to their progeny, perhaps envisioning a MLB baseball legacy.…
“Since the 1980s, more women than men have been graduating from college in America. According to data from 2012, the percentage of women who enrolled in college after high school rose to 71%, while the percentage of men remained stagnant at 61%” (Andersen par 5). However, today sexism still exists in some areas. Although it is not legal, some employers when looking to hire someone may choose a male applicant over a female applicant based solely on gender. Some jobs today may even offer a higher salary to a man than what would be offered to a woman.…
This gender bias is definitely one that women have to deal with more frequently compared to men. Deborah Tannen author of “There is No Unmakred Woman,” reveals that women have been predominantly “marked,” which refers to the “meaning of a word [combined with] a linguistic particle that has no meaning on its own” from the moment they enter this world (Tannen 410). Even if it’s hair, clothing, makeup or surnames, there is no style that leaves women unmarked. This causes “gender markers” to “pick up extra meanings that reflect common associations with the female gender” (Tannen 411). If a woman does even the merest action that society does not approve of, it expresses out a memo that will be judged and criticized.…
hen most people think of an NFL broadcast they come up with a somewhat superficial depiction of a bunch of men tackling each other for two hours with a couple commercials sprinkled in the mix. When in actuality, it is much more than that. There is a whole culture that surrounds a sports broadcast, including, but not limited to, social, political, and economic factors. While watching the NFL broadcast of the Houston Texans versus the Dallas Cowboys I noticed some of these factors such as gender roles, race logic, and racism in sport media coverage come into play.…
For many decades the trope “like a girl” has been highly analyzed and debated. Starting in 1980 with political philosopher Iris Marion Young’s essay “Throwing Like a Girl” and most recently in the feminine care product company, Always’s “#LikeAGirl” campaign, which debuted during the 2015 Superbowl, this phrase’s origin, usage, and implications have been explored and argued. It is my goal to further unpack this trite expression by discrediting some of the theories proposed in the past as well as formulating my own based on my understanding of language and gender studies. To begin, the first question we must ask is what does it mean “to throw”? The Merriam-Webster dictionary first defines it as “to propel through the air by a forward motion…
1. Sports can transform any boundaries real or imagined. A good example is the African Americans not being taught to swim and also when he mentioned that in the past they were not allowed to the swimming pools. 2.…
Gender roles and stereotypes have always been an issue in society, and they still are to this day. Although feminism and woman’s rights have come so far in the past years, there is still more progress to be made and the sexist labels do not only happen to women. Having gender stereotypes, that begin when we are young, creates the platform for many of these sexist issues that women, as well as men, are still facing. The article “Why Boys Don’t Play with Dolls” written by Katha Pollitt expresses the ideas of male and female stereotypes along with feminism.…
Racism is one the single greatest injustices known to mankind. So much hate and violence that exists in this world comes from racism. African Americans struggle with this everywhere and even struggled with it in the post WWII booming economy at their jobs. Employment discrimination was impossible for African Americans to avoid in this post war era. This discrimination impacted all forms of employment for African Americans including “America’s Game” of baseball.…
The Like a Girl campaign is the company Always’ way of promoting confidence in women and girls going through puberty. Unfortunately, women seem to lose confidence as they become older and enter puberty, either from internal (self-hatred) or external reasons (society). The campaign uses the phrase “Like a Girl” to explain that activities done in a “girly manner” are not derogatory and should not mean anything hurtful. Telling boys they throw like a girl is as detrimental as telling girls they throw like a girl. This phrase should not be derogatory nor should it be a means of promoting better performance, especially in athletics.…
Due to the lack of this part of education, most children think society as prefect place where there are equal rights and equal opportunities regardless of the gender. Once they are out of school they realize that what they thought of perfect is not so perfect. Even now the majority of the time, superior jobs are offered to men, but not to…
In todays world, racism and sexism is still an issue in society as well as in the classroom. I know a female who was told by her father that she should not go to college but to stay home and dress presentably to attract a rich man to marry her. Some situations like what my friend was in is because of religious purposes and some are because the father is continuing the customs from back in the 1940s, but now a day’s, women are becoming as successful as men and some even more than men. Even though females do the same jobs as males, in some workplaces women are still looked…
Professional sports are sports in which athletes receive a disbursement for their performance ("Definition of Professional Sports in English” 1). Professional sports originated in the United States during the mid-nineteenth century. According to the article “Beginning of Organized Sports in America,” this distinctive league was “formed on capitalistic ideas” and soon developed into a nationwide phenomenon. Sports play a substantial role in cultures across the globe. In America, the success of professional sports is frequently ascribed to their reflection of societal values; which attempt to define the moral and ethical ideals attributed to a society.…
Gender is an important characteristic in distinguishing an individual’s identity within society; but what if gender didn’t exist? Relating back to Adam and Eve, the first man and woman to exist on planet Earth, we’ve implemented a separation among the sexes of human beings and principles that pertain to how one should live their life accordingly. We have always been taught that we are either a boy or a girl, a man or a woman, but we have never stopped to consider the possibility that evolution no longer supports this idealized approach. In ‘X: A Fabulous Child’s Story’, author Lois Gould considers what may happen when a child is raised without a gender and is undistinguishable as either a boy or a girl. Her piece challenges the issues involved…
