If children’s toys were marketed based on racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic groups, a major backlash would occur; however, companies have produced and marketed gender-differentiated toys to the masses for decades if not centuries. In the midst of the modern push toward gender equality, aisles are still separated by pink and blue, aggression and domesticity, heroes and princesses, and so forth. Since the beginning of time, there have been separate ideas about how men and women should act. These specific gender roles have been taught to the children which they carry with them throughout some of the most influential times in their lives especially in college. This is the first time young adults get to experience freedom in a sense that they are not under their parent’s constant supervision. Those college kids then take what they learned from their parents and combine it with what is shown in social media and how their fellow peers act. The author of the article Gender, Toys and Learning is Becky Francis, who is a Professor of Education and Social Justice, as well as the author of many other academic journal articles and books. Francis’ research was funded by the Froebel Research Institute and published in the journal Oxford Review of Education in 2010. As a child and now as an adult I have always enjoyed toys, so this report will be reporting on children’s gender and toys. While shopping for my family and friends children for birthdays and Christmas I will play with the toys to check them out to see if they would enjoy the item chosen. It takes me back in time as a child and the memories that I had, so it can be extremely difficult being and adult shopping for kids. I contacted and spoke to Kathy at Hasbro Toy Company who completed my survey; it was quite interesting listening to her tell me about some marketing ideas that have been developed to increase sales for the company. When I collected data, one of the observations I made is that gender in toys is highly apparent than race and ethnicity. Walking into a toy’s store is as entering into two different roles. Likewise, even through Target announced gender-neutral aisles, the toy packing undermines the purpose since all of the girl’s toys are covered in pink (Sweet 2015: 11/4). Girl’s toys often teach femininity in forms of passiveness and domesticity. For example, Sweet (2014) suggests that toys in the early part of the 20th century focused on teaching girls domesticity and homemaking, whereas boy toys prepared boys for an industrial and working economy.…
When I walked down the aisles, they were usually separated between boys, girls, and for all genders. You can tell by the color of the aisle. The girl aisle was mostly done in pink and purple. The boy aisle was mostly done with blue and green. I even noticed that the writing on the packages were even different.…

Feelings, thoughts and ideas are produced through setting changes. In the 1920’s the toys were segregated by gender, girl’s toys focused on domesticity and boy’s toys prepared boys for working in the industrial world. Boys got erector sets to build while the girls got sewing machines to make clothes. Going forward girl’s toys become more pink, become sexualized (dolls with breasts, big lips, makeup and skimpy clothes), and less practical for everyday household chores like before.
