Owen Blakemore and Centers used their study to expand upon previous research regarding opinions about toys' appropriateness for boys and girls. The authors conducted two related studies in which college students rated the gender-appropriateness of toys from as many categories as possible and then to sort the same toys based on their characteristics. In the first study, the students viewed photos of the toys and assigned them a number from a nine-point scale where each extreme meant the toy was for only one gender. The goal was to see how much opinions had changed since prior research.
