Gender And Pareidolia

Analysis
After performing the procedure and recording all data, it is obvious that gender affects pareidolia. The collected data has proven our hypothesis correct. When a female subject is tested, then the time it takes for the obscurity to be found will be decreased when time for finding obscurities is a function of gender. Gender was shown to have an influential aspect on the time taken to find the obscurities in the image. As said before, pareidolia is “the tendency to perceive a specific, often meaningful image in a random or ambiguous visual pattern”(New Scientist, 2011). The females tested in this experiment constantly had lower averages for each picture, proving that females found the obscurities faster than males and have increased

This can be explained due to the viewpoint and shadowing of the image. It can also be altered due to the fact that in the first image, the rose, the obscurity was in the center of the image. In the mountain image, the obscurity was in the left of the page. In the elephant image, the obscurity was found to be in the center of the page -- making it easier to identify it. Another common aspect of the qualitative data was that most of the female test subjects would often rotate the image or look at it closer or farther away. The male subjects would often keep the image at its original angle, but they tended to examine the image in the light. This observation was unique to benefit in the understanding of the male and female brain tendencies when attempting to confirm and seek the concealed …show more content…
Because this experiment goes hand-in-hand with pareidolia, paranoia, and attentiveness to detail, there are countless options for realistic utilization of this data. The information and research collected in this experiment displayed just how different male and female brains work. Knowing the variances in processing information is meaningful to the cognitive skills of males and females. Realistically, this knowledge could be beneficial to the career options. It has been proven that women tend to thrive with multitasking and communication, while males are higher performing with directional and motor skills. These scientifically proven traits are important to consider when trying to find a suitable career option. While each person is different, these characteristics are common within the general population. This experiment can also positively influence the understanding of paranoia. Paranoia can debilitate individuals through several diseases, such as, paranoid personality disorder or schizophrenia. Gathering new information can lead to the advancement of research and drugs to help with these diseases. It is also beneficial to understand how and if gender can influence the way that these conditions interact with the brain. This experiment has endless possibilities when it comes to the effective information and uses it

In the essay “#27: Reading Cindy Sherman and Gender” student author Anne Darby discusses in great detail a photograph of Cindy Sherman and gives her personal observations and opinion in doing so. Darby begins by illustrating the way the subject is cropped or framed within the photo. Darby continues to describe everything else within the photo, from the half smoked cigarette in the subject’s right hand, to the glass of champagne and ashtray lying on the table in front of her hand. Darby continues to describe with great detail the nuances of the female subject (Cindy Sherman) from the clothing she is wearing to the tears along with the mascara that are running down her face, to how the light gleams off of the tears. An image may show bias and can affect perceptions of a person by using a certain pose and angle, color choices, and additional props. In the article Why Time's Trump Cover is a Subversive Work of Political Art, it tells the reader to look at the portrayal of Trump, and to notice how the colors appear slightly muted, which creates a vintage effect, which the author says can remind the reader of World War Two, segregation, and the Cold War. The color choices of Trump's picture remind the reader of tough times. Color choices can create a connection between a person and a memory, whether it be good or bad, resulting in an association of the person with good or bad feelings. Pose also affects how the reader sees a person.…

Studies done by Shepard (1967) and Standing et al (1970, 1973) have shown that our visual memory is very good overall, but is still poor for unimportant details, or when foils are similar (Lecture 6, January 31st 2017). In the case of the officer’s altered testimony from fur collar to bushy hair, the error in visual memory is likely to have occurred due to similarity between the foils of bushy hair and a fur collar. Another way that limitations in visual memory were reflected in her testimony was through her correct recall of features such as the color of the killer’s car, but inability to remember the license plate number despite its importance; memory for text is significantly worse than memory for…

Out of the Darkness and into Individuality By: Brooklynn Chopko In society people tend to react to circumstances in two ways: either fighting the constraints placed upon them or choosing to shy away and hide, never really facing their problem. However, there are rare circumstances where an individual can completely forsake all societal conventions, often enduring harsh ridicule but coming out more gratified than before. In the painting Waited, the artist Clive Smith utilizes the hiding girl to employ the idea that societal constraints are weighing individuals down and one must break free from these conventions in order to escape one’s position.…

Since the beginning of time, there have been separate ideas about how men and women should act. These specific gender roles have been taught to the children which they carry with them throughout some of the most influential times in their lives especially in college. This is the first time young adults get to experience freedom in a sense that they are not under their parent’s constant supervision. Those college kids then take what they learned from their parents and combine it with what is shown in social media and how their fellow peers act. Unfortunately, this especially includes sex and men’s thoughts about women which during this time is mostly negative such as what was seen with the Harvard mens’ soccer team.…

In the background of the Art Critic, straight lines are brought together from their various angles to suggest the corner of an art museum, while many contour lines work together to create the organic shapes that make up the scene. Specifically, this painting depicts a young man who is leaning forward to inspect a portrait of a woman and looking through a magnifying glass to examine a brooch clasped close to her chest. Light and shadow are used to create the illusion of depth on the young man’s form; he almost appears to be three dimensional as he gazes at her portrait. The colors on the woman’s portrait are bright, involving the primary colors at a greater intensity than anywhere else in the painting.…

A common English idiom says “a picture is worth a thousand words” but sometimes there aren’t even words to describe a picture. That is the case for “The Pillars of Creation”. This picture was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The photo depicts a nebula with three towers of gaseous regions, hence the name; in a way, it is metaphorical. Fortunately, for the normal people in the world, there are no controversies that provoke unreasonable people.…

What differs from a photo of nature out in the sun with a photo of nature glared from the moon? Depth. The sun holds emphasis on light that contract to the environment which makes them glow. Therefore, the nature that is shown encaptures the distance from the camera to everything in front with the sun as its boundary. The moon works the same way except it overpowers what’s in front by censoring nature with darkness, making the photo apparent only to the moon than everything else surrounding it.…

There has always been a stereotype that females have a better social cognitive understanding than males, while the latter have a stronger sense of their surroundings. I have a bad sense of direction myself, but I’m good at standing for the position of others. It is found that many girls are good at navigating socially and generally boys can easily adapt to the perspective of others. It makes me believe that the stereotype that I mentioned earlier is untrue and that there must be some other genetic or environmental factors affecting these abilities. Different spatial and social cognitive abilities and what accounts for these differences are intriguing to me, which is why I chose psychology as my major and later decided to focus my research on human’s spatial and social cognitive abilities.…
