I signed up to be a mentor for the GEN1 Scholars Mentor Program and the student I was matched with was Sandy Gomez a Hispanic/Latino female, senior, first generation, commuter student who’s major is Music. She is a hard-working student who is very busy. The challenge we are having is connecting with each other face to face, with both of our busy schedules. The good thing is I signed up to mentor her for a semester and not just a few weeks. Through this assignment I have been able to attend two workshops regarding Gen1 Scholars mentor handbook and OARS: Strategies for Evoking Change Talk which means Open-Ended Questions, Affirmations, Reflections, Summary and Desire, Ability, Reason, Need (DARN). This information I am learning is helping me

Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

The project I have in mind is to create an information packet with details of my experience and success. Currently I am a Peer advisor for the Living Learning Communities on campus and I am also a G-Force mentor. As a Peer advisor I serve as a consultant for college freshmen living on campus. I am in touch with many other peer advisors and the supervisor, and I plan on keeping in touch with the supervisor and asking her, as well as some of the returning peer advisors, to hand out the packets to their residents. As a G-Force mentor I visit high schools along with other mentors to help juniors and seniors apply for colleges, financial aid, and scholarships.…

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

My ideas to inspire and engage my generation of Hispanics are to reach out to us more and provide help. Speaking rom personal experience, I think that most of us miss out on opportunities or even try is because either we do not have knowledge about all that is available to us or we cannot afford what we need to get there. I have been offered many chances to travel for my education, but missed out because my family could not pay to send me. I feel like if I do not have money, then I will not go far in life. National Leadership Forum On Medicine, People to People Ambassadors, and Down Under Sports all have reached out to me attend their programs, but cost too much for me to attend.…

My background and the cultural competency that I obtained from my interactions with varying populations, will allow me to bring a diverse perspective to the NJMS community. During my time at Rutgers, I mentored minority students and students from low-income families for three years. As someone who grew up depending on public assistance, I was able to form meaningful relationships with these students because I understood first hand some of the challenges they faced. These experiences have taught me how to recognize an individual’s unexpressed needs and has strengthened my ability to communicate with people from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. When looking towards the future, such skills will enable me to effectively address…

Though her family wanted her to better her education, they also did not want to see her move away so soon. She was breaking a custom that had been within the society for many years.…

Dr. Coy, Thanks for the response. I believe mentoring goes hand in hand with having strong ESL programs. ESL programs help immigrant students gain the literacy skills they need to succeed academically and survive in their new culture (Callahan, Wilkinson, Muller, & Frisco, 2009). Although ESL teachers are there to teach immigrant students English, they can also serve as mentors. In my initial thread, I mentioned that parent apathy is one of the risk factors for immigrant students who are on the verge of dropping out of school.…

I originally thought that by just being there for someone you were a mentor. I now know through this program that mentoring involves giving both tools and advice to effectively help your mentee. The relationship with a mentee is somewhat different than a relationship between friends. There is a sort of bond that occurs from helping the student but the student holds you to higher standards than a friend would. I am excited about mentoring next semester because I want to hone my mentoring skills even further be able to help my mentees in a more effective way.…
