Gelcaps Lab Report

Hypothesis
My hypothesis is if the pills are put in stomach acid, then the gelcaps will dissolve the fastest, because gelcaps are just gelatin capsule that hold the liquid inside. So when the liquid is released it will be absorbed faster than the other pills.
I base my hypothesis on Gel Caps or Coated? Pick the Right Pill, page 2 that says, “Soft, flexible gelatin capsules hold liquid-which may be absorbed more quickly than regular pills”.

Part B Q1. The normal dose of paracetamol is very safe to use and it is not over 4g per 24 hours; however, when the patient take more than 6g per 24 hours of paracetamol, the liver necrosis will happen within 10 to 12 hours and liver damage may occur within 24 to 48 hours. For the metabolism, most of the paracetamol is converted to nontoxic metabolites by the phase II conjugation of glucuronide and sulfate and a small amount of paracetamol is oxidized by the Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes in the phase I metabolism. In this phase, CYP1A2 and CYP2E1 enzymes convert paracetamol to N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPBQI) which is highly toxic substances.…

Purpose and Background Cells divide in two ways, mitosis and meiosis. Mitosis is used to produce cells that are genetically identical to the parent cell for growth, asexual reproduction, or repair after injury. Cells that are produced by mitosis are diploid, meaning that they have two complete sets of chromosomes, one from each parent. Meiosis is used to produce haploid cells that have only one set of chromosomes, a mix of chromosomes from both parents. Meiosis produces cells that are genetically unique from their parent cells.…

After, then other biochemical tests were performed that were specific to the gram- negative bacteria to start the identification process of the unknown. The results of the gram negative tests lead to the identification of the bacteria Alcaligenes faecalis. The gram stain procedure was the first test performed by isolating a colony from the pure culture streak plate. The gram stain was followed orderly right from the referenced laboratory manual. The test resulted to be Gram- Negative bacteria from the compound microscope which were pink and rod shaped that can be seen with the 100x objective lens with the oil immersion.…

The focus of this lab was to identify an unknown organism based on its characteristics and the results from each of the tests. There will be various of test to choose from in order to identify the unknown organism, which will eliminate numerous possibilities and narrow it down to one. All the fundamental skills that we have learned and practiced in the lab will be used to perform on our unknown such as aseptic technique, microscopic examination, the use of differential media, and determining if it’s positive or negative. Performing aseptic techniques is the most crucial step that requires the utilizing of transferring, inoculating, and storing bacterial cultures and media. Aseptic technique is defined as procedures that prevent contamination…

To determine the unknown’s morphology is the first step in narrowing down possible organisms. A MacConkey and Mannitol Salt Agar tests were conducted on the organism and revealed the following. No growth on the MacConkey plate resulting in a gram positive bacteria and the Mannitol Salt Agar result showed it could be Staphylococcus or Micrococcus. (1) A gram stain test was used in determining the shape, size and arrangement of the unknown bacteria (1). The unknown organism is heat fixed onto the slide, in order for the organism to be stained.…

Discussion Graph 1 displays the reaction time (in minutes) of how long it took for the Alka-Seltzer tablet to completely dissolve per trial. Graph 2 displays the averages of the reaction time which showed the higher the water temperature is, the faster the reaction time would be. At 65⁰C the average time for the Alka-Seltzer to completely dissolve was 1 minute 4 seconds followed by 1 minute 20 seconds at 35⁰C and ending with the highest average at 2 minutes 1 second (1.61). The hypothesis stated that hot water temperature would make the Alka-Seltzer tablet dissolve the fastest.…

Wang et al. (2015) formulated a solid dispersion to improve the solubility and bioavailability of Ginkgo biloba extract (GE) through hot melt technology. The polymer studied were Kollidon® VA64/Kolliphor® RH40 (85:15) and the extrusion was carried out at 120-125⁰C with 100 RPM with 25% drug load. DSC and XRD studies confirmed the amorphous conversion of the GE and the dissolution carried in 250ml of 0.1N HCl showed that the dissolution of solid dispersion of GE was significantly improved (2-3 folds at the end of 120 min) and much faster compared to pure GE and physical mixture. Similarly Fu et al.…

Complexation of Cyclodextrins Cyclodextrins (CDs) are most important carriers because of their semi-natural property as it is produced from a natural material i.e. starch, by simple enzymatic conversion. Solubility and dissolution rate of BCS class II drugs can be improved by addition or by complexation with hydrophilic carriers like cyclodextrins. Cyclodextrins have the capability to form inclusion complexes with the guest molecules i.e. poorly water soluble drugs. The formed inclusion complex shows significant changes physicochemical properties of drugs with respect to its solubility and dissolution rate. 2.1.2.…

Basic Biology The documents I attached include a lab report, worksheets, notes and one exam. My most memorable experiences in biology were in the lab. I got to test the effectiveness of lactase drops when exposed to solutions containing different pH or temperatures. My results indicated that the lactase enzyme had the optimal catalytic activity at temperatures similar to those found in the human stomach; however, the low pH in the stomach–ranging from 2 to 5– rendered the drops ineffective because the enzymes denatured significantly as the pH was lowered to 5 (WA-COMP-2009.SCI.1.1.6.L).…
