Week Four Scott Tsuchitani is a visual artist located here in San Francisco. Tsuchitani’s art has been featured in museums, galleries, and universities in eight states and here at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), SFMOMA Arts Gallery, Meridian Gallery, Asian Art Museum and de Young Museum. Before becoming a visual artist, Scott worked in documentary film on international productions and alongside Academy Award –winning filmmakers. His work relates to creating space and the dynamic process of visual culture. The use of black and white gives contrast and bolds the message. Nate Nevado loves hip hop. He uses fresh techniques, hip hop elements, and edutainment in the classroom. He is a counselor/coordinator at Skyline College Center for Innovative Practices through Hip Hop Education & Research (CIPHER), Rock The School Bells. He had actually received his Master’s degree in counseling here at San Francisco State University. The mission statement of Rock the School Bells (RTSB) states: To empower and educate our youth and students about the importance of higher education and career exploration, increase awareness of the value of personal development and healthy lifestyle, and promote social change within their communities through Hip-Hop.” Hip Hop has four parts: DJ, Graffiti, MC, and break dancing. The Center for Innovative Practices through Hip Hop Education and Research (CIPHER) of Skyline College is a hip hop and social justice community. To illustrate that hip hop can be used as an instrumental tool to teach life skills, to think critically about issues in their communities, and to be health conscious. They believe hip-hop should be a part of the educational curriculum across the board.

I would agree with the reading assignment in that Skyline College is as “recognized as the most diverse community college in California. Having been on Skyline campus I noticed the diversity in the students that attended. That is wonderful in itself because it allows several learning communities, to provide a specific cultural themes and teaches about different cultures, leadership skills, mentoring, and career options.
Week Six “Beats, Rhymes and Resistance,” a film by Dawn Mabalon, Lakan de Leon, Johnathan Ramos on the Pilipinos making a sound in the Los Angeles hip hop scene in the 90s. During this period Pilipinos had not yet established themselves as b-boy/girls, DJs, graf artists, and emcees. Today Pilipinos have been more recognized for their skills, and this documentary shows the history in the foundation of Pilipino/a artists in that
