Geek Love In Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven

I would say that the development of my reading throughout the semester was a puzzle being constantly worked on and added to. I started out the semester at the point in the puzzle where the edges were complete and I could see the big picture being revealed to me. I knew the basics of reading and interpreting and had the necessary skills to effectively tackle whatever piece of literature chosen for us. However, I was missing major sections of the puzzle and had gaps in my knowledge. I never had an appreciation for poetry or quite as deep of understandings of literature that this class helped me to achieve. The biggest impact on me of all of the pieces of literature that we read was Geek Love. How was it that a novel so twisted and maniacal …show more content…
While this type of writing was introduced to me in high school, the different genres were never explained to me so I did not understand the fact that diversity was key in making sure that there was a type of poem that everyone could appreciate. For example, though I could not relate to the dark style that Edgar Allen Poe writes in (specifically from this class in “The Raven”), I was still able to see how classmates had different, more positive reactions than me. This showed me that the poem resonated with other people and, while I did not get as much out of it, did not mean that Edgar Allan Poe was a bad writer or that his poetry should not have been as publicized. This understanding of the necessity of diversity was the next piece in my …show more content…
I thought that “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by William Wordsworth was an absolutely stunning piece that gave me the dreamy, lyrical feeling that I expect out of poetry. This spark of feelings created through learning about this genre made me search for more of it. Over Thanksgiving break, I found a website with a lot of William Wordsworth’s poems and have read so many already. I also have plans to rent or buy a copy of The Norton Anthology of Poetry to get a diverse look at more poems. This new appreciation for poetry was a big section of my

Towards the beginning of this semester we began reading a lot of interesting poems and short articles of such. There were a couple of poems that actually hit me, that actually got my attention and made me wonder if it was true or even made me feel a connection to the writer. There is a quote by E. L. Doctorow that says “Good writing is supposed to evoke sensation in the reader. Not the fact that it is raining, but the feeling of being rained up.” (E. L. Doctorow).…

Now in college, it feels like I’ve sat down for the longest, scariest, most agonizing rollercoaster of my life. English in high school wasn’t much of a concern to me. Teachers didn’t persist on teaching students good writing habits or the depth of what writing can go into, like they do in college.…

My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…

Dylan Thomas once said, “Poetry is what in a poem makes you laugh, cry … makes you know that you are alone in this unknown world, that your bliss and suffering is forever shared and forever all your own.” (Huffington Post) Poetry is a vital language that is everywhere around us, but unfortunately ‘actual’ poetry is becoming a lot less popular. Nevertheless, poetry should not be a dead art -- rather it should be embraced. Poetry is a significant art form that positively affects people’s lives by providing them with a vital aid to living. Poems are able to help people with many emotional problems they may be experiencing.…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
