While this type of writing was introduced to me in high school, the different genres were never explained to me so I did not understand the fact that diversity was key in making sure that there was a type of poem that everyone could appreciate. For example, though I could not relate to the dark style that Edgar Allen Poe writes in (specifically from this class in “The Raven”), I was still able to see how classmates had different, more positive reactions than me. This showed me that the poem resonated with other people and, while I did not get as much out of it, did not mean that Edgar Allan Poe was a bad writer or that his poetry should not have been as publicized. I thought that “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by William Wordsworth was an absolutely stunning piece that gave me the dreamy, lyrical feeling that I expect out of poetry. This spark of feelings created through learning about this genre made me search for more of it. Over Thanksgiving break, I found a website with a lot of William Wordsworth’s poems and have read so many already.
