Initially language originated as a means for people to communicate about the physically present here and now, this was the very foundation of the human language. As language started evolving from its use as a tool for survival the focus moved on to how we use language and what we use language for, thus creating the meaning behind its use. Gee states “people, in talk and thought, move from the concrete to the abstract”. Gee describes this by comparing losing a physical object, concrete, and loosing something mentally, abstract or metaphorical.
