Dear Student

Welcome to the ‘Graduate Certificate in Spanish Language Teaching to Adults: Module 1’. It is designed to give you a basic training in how to teach Spanish to adult learners.

The course has run successfully for many years at the Instituto Cervantes, and is now accredited by the University of Roehampton. It is taught by a team of teacher-trainers with a great deal of classroom experience in teaching foreign languages, and who want to pass on their expertise, knowledge and skills to you!

MODULE RATIONALE

Module 1 is an introduction to teaching Spanish as a foreign language, for those with little or no teaching experience, or anyone who has already done some teaching but without having done a formal course in teaching adults. It gives a comprehensive overview of the background principles and practical techniques of language teaching to adults, whilst also encouraging participants to take a critical and reflective stance towards teaching and learning. It also offers a small amount of teaching observation and microteaching.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students who successfully complete this module will:

be able to make critical connections between their own language-learning experiences, principles of language-learning and possibilities for their own teaching

be able to analyse the main roles and responsibilities of a teacher working with adult learners and be able to apply them critically

be able to identify typical features of adult learners / language-learners, and evaluate how to use appropriate teaching and learning approaches for language-teaching with adult learners

understand good principles in planning language-teaching/learning sessions

have a good understanding of appropriate methods and techniques for teaching grammar, lexis and the 4 skills (listening, reading, listening, writing), and use
