Gay Straight Alliance Research Paper

In my high school there was a gay straight alliance group. It started out my senior year and didn’t last long from what I hear. I like the purpose of the groups. I love how they are to make LGBT kids feel safer at their school. The schools should provide the facilities and forum for these kinds of groups. These kinds of groups make the kids feel safer and the other kids more open to accepting them. In my high school more than half the kids were religious. We also didn’t have many open gay/bi/transgender people that I knew about. The kid who made this group wanted to do it for a while. Everytime he wanted to put up posters of his club, and since posters had to be approved by the principle, he would tell us that the principle would avoid him. The kid even told …show more content…
I think the schools should treat these kinds of clubs like any other club. They actually should be very happy that the students want each other to feel safe and okay to be themselves and trying to make a difference. According to Our Sexuality by Crooks and Baur. “...Lesbian, gay and bisexual young adults who experience family rejection during their adolescence due to their sexual orientation were over eight times more likely to have attempted suicide, almost six times more likely to report high levels of depression, and over three times more likely to have used illegal drugs and to have enaged un unprotected inetercourse…”(Crooks/Baur,2014,270). I know it says family, and I am talking about it high school, but if it is this bad when they get rejected from family than it can be a lot worse when they’re also rejected from their schools. That’s why I think clubs like these are important. It makes it so these topics are less taboo to talk about. More of the kids are accepting to gay/lesbian/bi kids and understanding
