Famous journalist, Hendrik Hertzberg, states, “Marriage should be between a spouse and a spouse, not a gender and a gender.” This quote speaks volumes because it makes it clear to people that marriage should not be affected on what gender you are, but should just depend on two people who love each other. Gay marriage has been a controversial topic ever since the LGBT community confronted society about their rights as an individual. Even though same-sex marriage was officially made legal across all 50 states since June 26, 2015, same- sex couples and rights activists have felt the discrimination they always have, if not worse (Steverman). Even though it is officially legal for same-sex couples to get married, not everyone agrees with this statement. Gay marriage should be legal because not everyone practices the beliefs of Christianity, love is love, and everyone is equal and deserves the right to love someone.
Homosexuals are hated across the nation. In 2007, reported hate crimes committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation increased to 1,265, the highest level in five years ("Hate Crimes Against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Individuals - Confronting the New Faces of Hate."). Even though gay couples cannot reproduce, many adopt or have donors to help create a child. People believe that this is negligent because every child should be raised by a mother and a father to succeed in today’s society (Lombardo). Every reputable social science study done to date has affirmed that children do best, by whatever measure is used, when they have a married mom and dad ("CQ Press : Should Gay Marriage Be Legally Recognized?”).
