Gay Marriage Debate

In recent years, gay marriage has taken the nation by storm. Over half of the United States have lifted gay marriage bans, and the number still continues to grow. However, there will always be a push back when a controversial subject like gay marriage becomes settled to please one side rather than the other. Both sides of the gay marriage dispute have voiced their opinions and reasoning very often whenever the topic comes up. The opposition to gay marriage states that it is sinful to be gay, and allowing the marriage of gays is allowing sin to take over the nation. Some can even turn to the complete opposite meaning that they once were. Now, the meaning of “marriage” is subject to change. People marry for various reasons: love, money, children, and other benefits. Marriage is no longer just about a man having a woman. There is also the fact that infertile people marry, but they can never have children of their own. Also, as stated previously, a religious-based reason for a law or ban is not valid in our government due to the separation of church and state. Opponents of gay marriage also say that the legalization of gay marriage will just lead to the acceptance of other nontraditional relationships. This includes bestiality, polygamy, and even incest. In our society, these types of relationships are not acceptable, and even illegal in some states. This branches off of the idea that our nation is accepting, and even promoting, sin against God. There is no reason to believe that the acceptance of gay marriage will lead to the acceptance of other nontraditional relationships. In gay marriage, both people are normally consenting to the relationship. When it comes to bestiality, pedophilia, and incest, there is normally or always no consent. Consent is always necessary for relationships in today 's society. If not, it 's viewed as an unhealthy relationship. Luckily, the amount of acceptance is growing rapidly. People are learning more about why opposing the legalization of gay marriage is nonsensical, even if they personally do not agree with homosexuality. Religious people are also learning to accept gays, particularly due to the fact that their religion even says to not judge, but accept and love everyone. The only real solution to solve this debate is to educate people about homosexuality, and show them that gay marriage can not bring the downfall of the nation like some people believe. The opposition must gain a new perspective on the subject and learn why gay marriage is nothing to be against. There is really no logical reason to oppose gay marriage in our society. We are governed by man-made laws, not one religious book. The definition of marriage is changing, and it is definitely for the best. This change and legalization will lead to the inclusion of same-sex couples, and they may finally marry the people that they love. With a ban on same-sex marriage, it treats these couples as almost second-class citizens, denying them of the rights that other American citizens get to enjoy. Marriage is about love, not genitals and reproduction. Love should not be banned just because some people do not agree with
