Gay Marriage In Australia Essay

Improved Essays
Mr. Abbott, I stand here before you today to address an issue I currently see in Australia. This issue is with the current marriage equality, understanding, or lack thereof, in Australia. I know you have probably heard this speech a thousand times, but today I am asking you to listen to me as I am part of this nation’s youth and future. My generation will stand on this earth long after you have ceased your power, in fifty years the future generations will be moulded around the decisions you make today. In the 21st century Australia has made some progress in protecting the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) community, there have been laws put in place to protect against discrimination. We protect them in their work by not allowing …show more content…
Abbott I don’t know if you understand quite what discrimination is but in my opinion, not letting two people to marry based purely on the fact that they are the same gender is discrimination. Not letting people get married is completely contradictory to what our great country is supposed to stand for. Something I hear a lot in response to equality is “letting gay people get married will ruin the sanctity of marriage”. Some people in this country seem to be more comfortable with the 71 year old Geoffrey Edelsten planning to marry his 25 year old girlfriend than they are with a same sex couple getting married and having a family together. I am unaware if you are one of those people, but what I do know is, while you are sickened at the thought that homosexual couples want to get married and have families of their own, I’m scared at the thought that all my friends and people I have grown up with will one day plan their dream weddings with the one they love and I will not receive that same opportunity. I am scared that while people are announcing the birth of their first child, I will still be fighting this fight for myself and thousands of others who have been denied these basic human rights, like the right to marry who you

This is a very interesting topic for me and a very personal one as well. It hits home for those that are dear to me that there are so many challenges that we have to face on a daily basis regarding the issue of what is legal, moral, and thereof. I think that throughout the United States and across the country that there are many government officials and administration that are faced with the decisions of having to change many rules, policies, and regulation to accommodate the new law that grant same sex individuals and couples the same equal rights and protection to be in a union or marriage like that of the traditional marriage of that of a man and woman. There has been many challenges from many interest groups that was either against or for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).…

Laws need to be constantly reformed even if the decision only helps out a certain group in the society, as it creates a neighbourly atmosphere in the society. It also allows minority groups to feel self belonging, in a world where many people are trying to abolish same-sex marriage many people can consider Australia a safe zone where they feel accepted which in fact helps cultural diversity and increases the countries tourism. The ‘De Facto’ includes same-sex marriage in 28 different pieces of…

Stepping in the direction of equality For over twelve years I have been called many names; “disgusting”, “sick”, “dyke” and “faggot” being a few of them. If I could change who I love, I would had changed it as a toddler or when I had to move in the fear of being kicked out and taken away from my brother, that’s just the reality of my situation. When I was asked “What message do you think people in your generation need to hear?” I responded with “equality and equal opportunity for all people, despite any factor, whether it be race, gender, sexuality or religion.”…

Argument The main argument is that the majority of Australia would like to have marriage equality but powerful individuals believe it is not an important issue. Rodney Croome, national director of Australian Marriage Equality argued that it is only a matter of time before same-sex marriage legalises. However, Senator Eric Abetz believes that same-sex marriage is highly trivial at this point in time and should not be discussed. This notion was disputed by Keegan Buzza, who believes that Abetz is unaware of the full extent of the issue.…

Dear Malcom Turnbull, Australia is a wonderful country because of the freedoms extended to its citizens – We allow people to celebrate their cultures, pray to their gods and express their opinions, but gay people can’t unite and prove their love like any other straight couple… I personally find this outrageous, as a country, the whole 23.13 million of us, we have invested our trust in you to create a successful and overall happy environment to live in. But how can you claim you’re doing us justice, when you’re denying approximately 2.31 million Australians the right to marriage. There are two reasons for someone to be homophobic. Either you’re gay yourself and you’re trying to conceal it, or maintain christian/catholic and/or other religious values.…

Gay Marriage and Equality Gay marriage, these two words can make people go from being completely civilized, to arguing like crazy. This is a very sensitive topic for many people, and I honestly don't know why it has to be. I am fully supportive of the gay marriage law and rights. I think that through the years we have had this image of what a perfect society is supposed to be like. Trying to make the perfect society has ruined us we no longer accept people for they are, we only accept people that fit our own idea of perfect.…

Overview Same-sex marriage is a highly controversial topic of discussion spreading from communities to parliaments and governments, and has become increasingly recognised all around the world over the past few years. Since 2001, many countries have passed bills to legalise same sex unions and provide them with equal rights, and then years later have fully legalised gay marriage, the first being The Netherlands (2001), however Australia is not one of those countries. Gay marriage and obtaining equal rights for same-sex couples has been drifting around the Australian parliament for years, with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd (2007-2010, 2013) promising action within 100 days of the election date if re-elected in 2013, however the Liberal Party won the election and Tony Abbott became Prime Minister. Despite Tony Abbott’s sister Christine Forster being in a engaged to her partner Miss Virginia Edwards, strongly opinionated and exceptionally religious Mr Abbott still opposes same-sex marriage and has no intention of legalising anything same-sex related.…

The topic of gay marriage is a very controversial issue no matter what angle you analyze it from. Wether it is based on the belief that love is love no matter what one feels, or if it is immoral based on a passage in the bible.
