With a total of 36 states legalizing gay marriage and many countries across the world legalizing gay marriage it was clear that gay marriage was receiving support from not only citizens in the U.S. but across the entire world. Finally the Supreme Court took the case into consideration and as stated before gay marriage was legalized with a 5-to-4 vote. Celebrations across the the states arose and many same-sex couples married in states that never allowed it before. Conservatives on the other hand were of course upset. In conclusion, the legalization of gay marriage had huge political effect on the U.S. It caused controversy and nearly split the U.S. for a long time. The first advantage is marital tax deduction; this is a huge advantage to married couples because they can, “transfer an unlimited amount of assets to your spouse at any time, free from tax. That also includes leaving assets in your estate to your spouse without estate or gift tax subjection.” (Dylan S. Mitchell) The second would be joint taxes, this is a benefit because you can deduct two exemption amounts from your income as opposed to only deducting one amount. Third, you also get social security benefits; if you do not qualify for social security benefits you can receive your spouse's benefits.
