My Mental Health

Improved Essays
So there have been a few events in my life that have changed my view on the world, affected my mental and emotional health, and made me rethink who I am. A lot of those revolve around how gay I am, hence my title. Of course that’s just one aspect of who I am, so not everything that’s happened to me has to do with that. A lot, but not everything. At least not completely. The summer between 8th and 9th grade, I missed my two best friends a lot. Of course I missed all my friends, but it felt different somehow. I just couldn’t stop thinking about how much I missed them and how much I loved spending time with them. I started to suspect that maybe I missed them differently from my other friends because I felt differently for them from my other friends. …show more content…
At first it seemed nice, and I just wanted to learn to speak Korean on my own rather than go to school for it. I did not anticipate exactly how much you have to work at entry level jobs to get by in South Portland. By the last year, I was having anxiety attacks almost every day, I never had time or energy to study or do much for fun, and I was working so much my body hurt everywhere. This all led to a decline in my mental health, and an eventual breakdown at the end of the year. My thoughts had started leading dark places, and I had to do something drastic to get my life back on track. In the end I decided to go to CMCC and to find an apartment in the area with my mom, seeing as she was having financial troubles as well and Lewiston/Auburn is much cheaper than the Portland area. I was able to get a job I actually enjoy working in a daycare, which alone has improved my mental health a lot. I also got health insurance so I could finally start seeing a doctor again, as well as a therapist. I finally feel like I have my anxiety mostly under control, I’m so excited to go to school, and I feel like my life is back on

From the day I stepped on campus at Bryant University I knew there was something special about this place. This place wasn’t like anything I’d ever experienced before. Growing up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, I attended a large public high school, with over 1,000 kids in my class. Based on my experience in a large high school, I assumed the only logical progression for me was to attend a large public state university. I assumed I would join all of my high school best friends at one of the state schools.…

After I graduated high school a few years ago, I attended the University of Alabama for a short time before I decided that I did not want to be in school at the moment, and would rather work until I was ready to go back to school. Being in the small town of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was a culture shock to me being that I was born and raised in the suburbs of Washington D.C., and then moved to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where I always had plenty of activities to choose from. Coming to Union College was not something I had been planning for a long time; it was very last minute and was a difficult decision to make seeing that I had already left college in the past, partial reasoning because I was not happy in a small town: I felt trapped. Ever since the year 2012, I have moved five times living in four different states—Alabama, Florida, Maryland, and Kentucky—which has been stressful for me to say the least. The move to Barbourville, Kentucky was not entirely easy, it was difficult to leave my family and move to a part of the U.S. that I had never visited before.…

Growing up in a military family never allowed me to settle down and call a single place home. Starting with what felt like a new life every four years, with new people in an unfamiliar place definitely helped to shape me into the person that I am today. The idea that I was given in fourth grade of moving from Germany back to the United States was difficult to believe, but the idea of moving there with only my mother was unfathomable. Yet after a short time, what seemed to be unimaginable was fairly simple. I was able to adjust quickly; I soon graduated middle school and was accepted into Wayne School of Engineering.…

“I am gay,” Jonathan, my long time friend, whispered to me as I sat across from him eating my Chipotle burrito bowl. Many thoughts raced through my mind as I searched for the proper words to respond. I struggled not because his revelation changed my opinion towards him, but as the first person he confided in, I wanted to reassure him that this has not changed the love and the sense of belonging between us. We live in the “Bible Belt” of America, which holds strong conservative cultural and religious views, so Jonathan was facing a daunting task of revealing his sexual orientation.…

My Biggest Failure After countless, long summer days, my best friend, Melina and I both dreaded to go back to school as Sophomores. We had known each other ever since the fourth grade and everyone around us such as our peers and family members had known us to be inseparable. She basically lived with my family and I. My parents would also refer to her as “our adopted daughter.” We coordinated our outfits to dress alike, began running track together, and as we got a bit older we youthfully double-dated with the boys that we fancied at our school.…
