Jordan Schaeffer was just at the ripe age of 25 when his life was almost taken from him. On a trip to Miami, also known as one of the many safe havens for gays, his life turned around. Jordan and his boyfriend had just shared a kiss in Burger King when Jordan was taken from his comfortable life. Coming from California where he was accepted and homosexuality was okay, he had never been face to face with a hate crime. As he was slammed into the ground and being kicked, he was losing his feeling of safety in the world. “The victim suffered a shattered lip, nose, and sense of security” (Richens). These types of hate crimes can be fixed by educating people to know the consequences. Now, what can a regular person do? First people need to learn how to accept someone and set differences aside. The only way to accept people is by ignoring everyone's differences and spreading love. Realize that someone who is gay is just following their mind. Now, just like a task force would, people need to educate themselves. Learn the signs of a hate crime and how to stop one from happening. Make a plan for on what a person would do if they saw a gay hate crime happening. If someone else hasn't already done it, a person will need to call 911. If people don't see the severity of gay hate crimes, google gay hate crime victims and look at the damage; this is another part of educating the people. People need to open their eyes to what is happening around them. If a gay hate crime is spotted, work to stop it and alert authorities. Also, don't blame the victims for the hate they received. The most horrible thing a person can do is blame the victim and make them feel even worse. It's like blaming someone for being happy and living in their skin comfortably, it's not right. Don't be the person who watched a gay hate crime happen and didn't do anything about it; people want someone to help them. Don't be the immoral individual who stole someone's life. Accept everyone and put differences
