Context: According to The Guardian two gay couples kiss in Washington, DC in front of anti-gay protestors at the US Supreme Court as the court looks at the issues of gay marriage legalization. Currently, nineteen states, including Washington DC, in the United States have legalized and see same-sex marriage as constitutional according to Cable News Network. (Greg Botelho)
This image is significant in contrast to the controversy surrounding it because some LGBT individuals’ rights are seen as unconstitutional in the US and the people themselves are seen as though they are abnormalities in society. However, 19 states including Washington DC—LGBT individuals are accepted and recognized by the government. The significance of the kiss is as if to say, “Too bad Haters, I’m going to do what I want.” to the protestors. However, kiss is more than just that; it is an expression of passion and love for a significant other when all odds are against them. Couples stand in the cold just to make the point of kissing in front of protestors who are shielded behind their posters. Only one protestor is seen in the background of the image, this person’s sunglasses shield their identity from others, hiding themselves like they are afraid of the intimacy.
