Gay adoption is when a married gay couple wants to adopt a child to start a “real” family. The adoption process is a formidable one, especially if the couple happens to be gay. One of the first things a person will read on the front page of any gay adoption website is that it is harder for a same-sex couple to adopt than for a straight couple. This is true because it is ultimately the decision of the mother of the unborn child. Many adoption centers work with gay and lesbian couples but often their options are limited due to the laws from state to state that deny same-sex adoption. Shown through statistics, gay marriages have about the same amount of success and failure rates as straight marriages. Gay marriages last just as long, or longer than the average heterosexual marriage, due to the commitment made while going through the entire process of getting married to one of the same sex. In addition, children who have been adopted by a gay couple are more open to new ideas, and thus do better in school.
