The Archduke and his wife left their estate on June 23. They were given many warnings not to go to the capital city of Bosnia, Sarajevo. They ignored the warnings and were even given a bad omen when his car’s axels overheated on the way to the Bosnian border. The Archduke said, “Our journey starts with an extremely promising omen. Here our car burns, and down there they will throw bombs at us”. As they drove into the capital city of Sarajevo they attracted a crowd of onlookers with the assassinator Gavrilo Princip included. Even though he was in the crowd the Archduke and his wife were treated with reported warmth and politeness.
On June 28, the day he was killed, the Archduke sent a congratulatory telegram to his eldest son concerning his recent exam result. They departed on a short train ride to
Sarajevo later that morning. After the short train ride Ferdinand and Sophia got into an opened-roofed car and drove to Sarajevo’s city hall. There was a reported inadequate security as Austro-Hungarian officials were more focused about the food served at the feast.
