What hair color? Tall or short? Smart or athletic? Imagine that you are able to choose the traits of your child, would you create a perfect baby or conceive your baby naturally? Researchers have been saying that parents will be able to choose their child’s genes. This can be done by placing a sperm and an egg on a plate to be observed and modified. By PGD, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and genetic therapy, human embryos can be checked for genetic defects and can be inserted genes that treat diseases. Of course, parents will always want their children to be healthy and successful. Being able to create designer babies might change the future both in a good or a bad way, it’s just a matter of time. The PGD technology is used for checking genes and scanning embryos for any functional disorders. Babies that were checked by PGD and born are meant to be healthy and be in a really good shape. As seen in the movie Gattaca, Vincent was born with a heart disease and was expected to only live for 30 years. On the other hand, Vincent’s brother Anton has inserted a gene that prevented his chance of heart disease. Throughout the movie, Vincent is depicted as a fragile man while Anton was shown as a tough man. This type of technology could really save many human lives and can prevent children from dying at an early age. According to the article written by Allen Goldberg, modifying genes could actually help families avoid harmful genetics. For example, before placed in the dish, embryos could go through PGD and can get removed any harmful genes that could potentially cause the disease to their baby. This means a generation of the family could be saved from fatal diseases. Scientists being able to remove and modify gene is a really huge step in human health and will prevent people from dying at an early …show more content…
Due to the fact that designer babies are worth $100,000, not everyone would be able to afford it. People may be imagining that a big discrimination might occur between the naturally conceived children and the designer babies just like the movie Gattaca. Discrimination is one of the main themes of Gattaca and it shows how upper-class and lower-class people are divided. Our society facing a discrimination like Gattaca is just unrealistic. There is no way that rich and poor people will get completely divided. Even if designers babies might be only for the rich, it doesn’t guarantee that every wealthy person will create a designer baby. No matter educated or uneducated, healthy or unhealthy, rich or poor, everyone is still becoming friends and working together. Therefore, designer babies will not cause a massive discrimination and will only encourage to improve the

Being able to design your child with specific traits that give them an advantage would then make a big gap between the rich and poor, being that rich can pick the traits out for a “better child”. This could create even more social separation between the rich and the poor than we see today. The last major ethical problem is that we do not know the true side effects that it could have on the kids in the future. Do we really want to be putting kids at risk later on in their life, just so they can have “desirable” traits, like hair or eye color? These ethnical issues are hard to ignore when thinking about gene therapy, and designer…

You may ask “what are designer babies?” Well, designer babies are when the parents of a baby can choose the phenotypes, also known as your traits, such as eye color, height, hair color, and many more. Although having to pick your own baby’s trait would be nice, there are indeed some ethical and moral issues when doing so. One obvious problem is the cost, the practice is not going to be cheap. As a result, not everyone is going to afford this cost which can lead to a society gap, where designer babies will be smarter and better than ordinary babies.…

What would you do if you were able to “design” your child. Genetically modifying them to become the most perfect human being. Slowly maneuvering its way into our society, genetic engineering to modify the characteristics of humans prior to birth has surfaced in the past years. Genetic Engineering is the manipulation of genetic material to modify the characteristics of an organism. In the film Gattaca, we are introduced the concept of “human perfection”, where society controls the genes their children are made up of, by genetic modification, to make certain that they are created to the best of their abilities, “perfect”.…

“Designer Babies” is a layman’s term used to describe what is known in the medical field as genetically engineered of human gametes, zygotes and embryos also known as germ line modification, (Wikipedia). There are countless problems surrounding designer babies, an example being a gene does not code just for one function, thus a gene medication can be used to solve a problem while it causes another problem involuntarily, (world press 2013, April 28). People have questions about this process such as; is designing a baby ethical? Then there are problems attached to this process that give rise to questions that are impossible to answer, such as; If the process were made acceptable and ethical by members of society and would the parent be modifying only for medical purposes or in hopes to have the most “perfect baby”, (Debate.org).…

The increase of knowledge regarding the topic altering genes has become rapid and have open and paved the hope of designing your own perfect baby. Even today, the use of reforming and adjusting the genes of an unborn child is being put in effect. “Techniques of genetic screening are already being used, whereby embryos can be selected by sex and checked for certain disease-bearing genes. This can lead to either the termination of a pregnancy, or if analyzed at a pre-implantation stage when using In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), can enable the pregnancy to be created using only non-disease bearing genes” (Steere, 2011, para. 6). Altering the babies genes can not only harm the baby, however, can also terminate the baby.…

Some believe that giving parents the option of genetically engineering their baby will result in eugenics driven by egoism. People might take advantage of germline manipulation by creating embryos that will be their own idea of what is perfect, thus objectifying and commodifying children. Some opposers even say that because these embryos will not have a say in whether they want to be modified or not, their rights will be taken away. Furthermore, regulating laws ensuring that genetic modification is used only for the correction of genuinely medical genetic conditions as opposed to enhancing a child’s appearance will be nearly impossible. Rich parents will use…
