GATTACA was a movie about genetically modifying people. Vincent Freeman was an aspiring astronaut. He had always wanted to go into space but his health issues made that dream impossible. His brother, Anton, was a genetically modified child. He was stronger and was promised to live a longer life than Vincent. Vincent tried everything to get into space but the farthest he could get was a janitor at the space station. One day he found someone that could help. This was a guy that could help Vincent change into another man, Jerome Morrow. According to Brendan Gallagher, GATTACA predicted the future of genetic discrimination. GATTACA also predicted the future of in vitro fertilization. For years, doctors have been trying to help infertile women get pregnant. GATTACA talks about how Anton was a genetically modified child. He was born without any heart abnormalities or anything that could stop him from doing what he wanted. The last thing that was nonfiction in GATTACA was when the director was killed and they tested a hair follicle to find out who the “suspect” was. This is something that is happening at police stations all across the United States today. This movie was meant to be science fiction but some things that happened in the movie are happening now, or they will be happening in the near distant future. This movie may be true in some …show more content…
We have many people in the world who are using in vitro fertilization today, including people in Cherry County. I feel as if our world could become genetically discriminated. Athletes could be at the Olympics simply because they were genetically modified before they were born. This could be a bad and good thing. For instance, if a human were to be born with a genetic disease it could be changed before he/she is

Gattaca is a science fiction film about the idea of science and technology in the late 20th century, that created an imaginary and futuristic society based on genetic engineering. Gattaca features the actors, Ethan Hawke (Vincent Anton Freeman), Jude Law (Jerome Eugene Morrow), Uma Thurman (Irene Cassini), and Loren Dean (Anton Freeman), to relay the story of a young boy who was conceived outside the eugenics program, and struggles to overcome genetic discrimination and fulfill his dream of traveling into space. In Vincent's society eugenics is very common, and although genetic discrimination is illegal, people are still classified as “invalid” or “Valid” using the biometric system. “Invalids” are naturally conceived specimens, that are…

Yet when his brother was born they went to a specialist and got the requirements to be a genetic baby. Similarly, in Brave New World bottles were used to identify what caste you will be put into when you are going to be born. Likewise in Gattaca we see that being born naturally you don't get much choice by to do unnatural jobs that don't need to require you dream about your dream job in the future. Yet being born genetically it allows you to dream of what you aspires and what you would like to become in the future. Referring back to electric fence from Brave New World, we can see that in Gattaca , there is an invisible electric fence in place.…

Genetic modification and identification, ever thought about it? Well in the movie “GATTACA”, it shows many types of technology to identify someone by their role in society through genetic identification and modification, the way they use both identification and modification through technology and other sorts is pretty cool. Would you ever consider having genetic modification and identification as part of society today? I feel that it would be interesting to have these things part of our society, but at the same time somewhat scary. As of right now, I don’t really know how I feel about having genetic modification and identification as part of our society.…

    Pros And Cons Of Gattaca

GATTACA is a movie about a dystopian future in the United States, many years from now, where people are judged based on their Genetics. Parents are able to visit Genetic Clinics where the sperm and egg are fertilized, and pick what traits they want their children to have, including resistance to disease, and genetic abnormalities. If I were President of the United States of America and was given a bill to allow Genetic Engineering, my decision would be to veto it immediately. I would veto this because I don’t want a society even remotely similar to GATTACA, because people are discriminated upon for things that they have no control over and cannot change. While I would veto this bill because of the cons, there would be pros to this for the short term and the long term.…

An Unethical Spin on New Life Imagine a world where little feet are running around that were genetically created or hearing a cry from a child who once was a chosen embryo knowing there was another embryo that was just tossed away. That is where our world might be in just a few short years if “designer babies” does not get stopped. There are researchers who are trying to get it legalized and people who have already had designer babies themselves. Designer babies should be illegal in the future because it is taking In Vitro Fertilization too far, it is unethical, not always reliable, and parents can have children without choosing their specific characteristics.…

Society’s views on the inferior is crucial in shaping them as individuals with differences down to science, however their personality highlights who they are. Gattaca explores the pre-existent reputation of “invalids”, suggesting no matter what you are, society has the presumption that you are not worthy enough of a superior life. The separation casted between “valids” and “invalids”, suggests society values one’s place and purpose over an individual’s personality and qualities. Gattaca’s tagline “there’s no gene for the human spirit” contradicts the film itself, as a person's self-worth cannot be measured by their genes. However, throughout the film, the dystopian society is isolated into two groups depending on what you are.…

Andrew Niccol presents Gattaca as a world destroyed by the pursuit of perfection and raises the question of what it means to be human. Niccol explores how personal identity and happiness are destroyed by pursuing perfection through the characters of Irene, Vincent and Jerome. Irene and Vincent struggled with their personal identities because of their genetic imperfections and Eugene suffered from the burden of perfection. Nonetheless, Niccol shows that these issues with perfection and imperfection can be overcome through the character development of Irene, Vincent and Jerome. Personal identity is destroyed by the pursuit of perfection and Niccol demonstrates this through the characterisation and costuming of Irene and Vincent.…

It was a shocking news, but on the other hand, it was kind of anticipated as there was astonishing discovery that became available since 2060, which is the genetic modification. Although it has not been the most common and trustworthy methods for having children due to its ethical reasons, some people still insisted on using the new genetic engineering system to manually create their children. Not only on the athletic criteria, but also there were various changes to the society due to the genetically engineered individuals.…

The goal of gene editing is to make modifications to specific areas of the genome. A topic that has been argued on in a big debate held by moderator John Donavan an author and correspondent for ABC News. Genetic engineering should not be accepted because of the many risks it can cause, the amount of money it would take to make these changes, and also it would not be fair to the parents who cannot afford it. Therefore, I do not believe it should be accepted in the United States or nowhere around the world.…
