1. Fitzgerald depicts Gatsby’s celebrations as theatrical events by there being an orchestra, “admission tickets” and props. “By seven o’clock the orchestra has arrived;” this is overdone as it is just a party and there is no need to bring an entire orchestra for it. Also, there are people that are “paying” to enter the event and usually events are free and one does not need to pay for a party but “People come for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own admission ticket.” Finally, it sounds as if there are props everywhere and it is similar to a movie set “premature moon, produced like a supper, no doubt, out of a caterer’s basket” shows that even the moon is a part of this show. The owl-eyed man thought the books were also fake just as props but he learns that they are real “Absolutely real – have pages and everything.” Nick encounters the owl-eyed man who says to him "This fella 's a regular Belasco," commenting on the …show more content…
Gatsby is extremely different from his guests at the party, while they are selfish and drunk he is completely sober; his guests do not care who he is and they are only there to party, no one there knows what he even looks like and when Nick first sees Jay Gatsby he did not know it was him because he expected Gatsby to be just like the other guests (drunk and having fun). However, James Gatz (change of name is also a disguise) puts on a façade to act sophisticated in front of the other guests and he does this to impress Daisy just as he does by hosting the massive celebrations. “It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it,” this quotation illustrates Gatsby’s “mask” by describing to us that he is confident and he is sure of himself; however, he is the complete opposite because he never shows himself at his own parties and he just watches everyone else while hiding and hoping Daisy will appear.
