The American Dream is basically everyone having freedom, the same rights, and opportunities, or a life of personal happiness. The American Dream is also believed to be that anyone can be successful in America if they just work hard enough. I feel as if this book is related to the American Dream much through personal happiness and hard work.
The quote at the end of the book is, “Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther… and one fine morning – So we …show more content…
This also could relate to Daisey. To Gatsby the green light was Daisy and she was his American Dream because one thing the American Dream is, is personal happiness and I feel as if Daisy was his personal happiness. Then in the quote it says “the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.” This is saying that it is a promise of a future but it recedes or moves back or away year by year. The American Dream is a promise, if you work hard this dream could come true but its constantly, to some people, being pushed back and further getting out of reach no matter how hard they work. Gatsby worked hard to become rich, he was in many jobs “I was in drug business and then I was in the oil business” (Fitzgerald271). After Gatsby and Daisy reconnected in the story, Gatsby told Tom that Daisy never loved him, as said on page 389 “She’s never loved you” (Ftizgerald389). After that there was car accident with Myrtle getting hit and slowly Daisy is starting to run away, I think, from Gatsby. Back to the quote again it says “but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will
