Maslow's hierarchy is a demonstrative pyramid of the levels in life. In the novel Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry, these three characters show a significant change of development Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy. Although it is not much, Matt does have a home. “The small cott behind the tree looked damaged and neglected” Because matt spends most of time playing with friends outside, he only needs a roof over his head for safety. The damaged and neglected cott is safe to an extent. Soon enough he will not have to suffer because he is moving up the hierarchy to love and belonging. Because matt is such a sweet and playful child, he moves to the love and belonging level, and Kira and Thomas take him in to feed him and properly parent him. Kira and Thomas show Matt the bathroom and bathed him. No two strangers would feed and look after a child for no reason, therefore Matt is a friend who is loved by Kira and Thomas.
