For GC, the common property including the roads in the GC scheme is private and it must be maintained by the residents through the appointed management corporation. Second, the construction of any fencing or wall separating the residents of the GC and non-residents is now allowed but the construction of the wall or fencing surrounding the GC area as a border between the GC area and non-GC area is allowed but it should not be more than 2.75 meters. If any wall or fencing is being built, there must be at least two entry and exit points for GC. Additionally, all the special areas for utilities such as electric, telephone, water, gas and sewage connections must be at least placed 2.5 meters within the GC area to enhance the service and facilitate the maintenance. As we embark on our journey to understand human behavior, social workers must give consideration to the communities in which the people live. Individual behavior is influenced by the interactions which takes place between the micro, macro and macro systems found within these particular settings. The interrelatedness among these social systems provides social workers with a variety of tools for improving the many exchanges which occur between the individuals and the social systems. Since human behavior does not exist in a vacuum; an essential element in reshaping behavior must be found within the communities where they either reside or have a membership to. Special attention must also be given to how the particular individual defines his own community membership.…

The landscape study area into which the proposed medium-density suburban patch is to be inserted is a 180km2 portion of land with its centre located approximately 6 kilometres south of the Brisbane CBD (refer to Figure 1). Consisting of a mix of developed and undeveloped land, the area in question is typical of much of the greater Brisbane region. Viewed through the lens of the P-C-M model, it is dominated by a relatively homogenous matrix of medium-density development interspersed with patches of commercial-industrial development, vegetation, and cleared open space (refer to Figure 2). It is these final two categories of patch that have been deemed appropriate for the proposed development to occur.…

Throughout this paper, I will argue that through a systematic process of connected laws and policies, concentrated incarceration formulates a cycle of harm that subdues entire disadvantaged communities. Looking at human capital, social network and social capital, family functioning, child development, and informal social control, I will discuss the ways in which zero tolerance policing has destroyed the ability of urban communities to thrive in society, essentially creating the criminals they aim to imprison. In this way, as illustrated by Randol Contreras, Paul Butler, Matt Taibbi and Todd Clear, pro-social control policy makers shape the path for coercive mobility forcing individuals into correctional institutions, and directly impacting the way their…

Then there’s the whole other race factor: Is concern over “income levels” and “demographic change” just gloss for an underlying assumption—that neighborhoods go south when white people move out and black people move in. If that isn’t enough to roil the revitalization waters, this emerging shift in neighborhood policy rings all kinds of alarm bells about gentrification and social engineering. Baltimore has avoided such prickly issues for the last decade with a community development approach under former Mayor Kurt Schmoke that favored the most decayed sectors in the city. Now, as Mayor Martin O’Malley’s administration begins formulating a new approach that gives greater consideration to neighborhoods that haven’t yet deteriorated those tricky issues threaten to surface. That has raised fears in some quarters of a polemical battle.…

The word gentrification was first coined by British sociologist Ruth Glass in 1964 when she observed certain alterations in the social structure and housing markets in certain areas of inner London (Mitchell, 2012). She noticed that it begins in a small district and rapidly proceeds until all or almost all of the working class occupiers are displaced and the whole social character of the district is changed (Mitchell, 2012). Because gentrification is such a widespread, international phenomenon that differs greatly depending on each case, there are many definitions. For the purpose of this essay, gentrification will be defined as Scottish geographer and widely accredited gentrification theorist Neil Smith (1982) described it: “the process by…

Ghetto make race outside of the ghetto by reinforcing the stereotypes against them. According to William Wilson in The Truly Disadvantaged, he argued that the stereotypes of the black, for example, will be reinforced by the “figures on black crime, teenage pregnancy, remain-headed families, and welfare dependency are released to the public without sufficient explanation”. (Wilson, 2012) Like what Gans and Molina argued to be the problem of researcher, general public and academic look at the figures of crime and whatnot to be the result of the culture and values of the particular racial group, but didn’t measure the conditions that people in the ghetto facing. Housing, water, education, and access to aid might be the reason behind the statistic, but were overlooked by the middle class standard and value.…
