Introduction
When you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), the foods you eat and your eating habits are very important. Choosing the right foods can help ease the discomfort of GERD. Consider working with a diet and nutrition specialist (registered dietitian) to help you make healthy food choices.
What general guidelines do I need to follow?
Choose healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, and low-fat (lean) meat, fish, and poultry.
Limit fats such as oils, salad dressings, butter, nuts, and avocado.
Avoid foods that cause symptoms. These may be different for different people. Keep a food diary to identify foods that cause symptoms.
Eat frequent, small meals instead of three large meals each day. Eat your meals slowly, in a relaxed setting.
Cook foods using methods

What foods are not recommended?
The following are some foods and drinks that may worsen your symptoms:
Grains
Any prepared with added fat.
Vegetables
Tomatoes. Tomato juice. Tomato and spaghetti sauce. Chili peppers. Onion and garlic. Horseradish.
Fruits
Citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruit, and lemon (fruit and juice).
Meats
High-fat or fried meats, fish, and poultry. This includes hot dogs, ribs, ham, sausage, salami, and bacon.
Dairy
Whole milk and chocolate milk. Sour cream. Cream. Butter. Ice cream. Cream cheese. Milk shakes.
Beverages
Coffee and tea, with or without caffeine. Carbonated beverages or energy drinks.
Condiments
Hot sauce. Barbecue sauce.
Sweets and desserts
Chocolate and cocoa. Donuts.
Fats and Oils
High-fat foods, including meats and fried foods. Oils, butter, margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressings, and nuts. Fried foods, such as doughnuts, French toast, French fries, deep-fried vegetables, and pastries.
