On average a person should lose 100 pounds off of their original weight before their surgery. Adams and Smith offer honest advice to patients that just received their gastric bypass. Gastric bypass cost anywhere from $20,000-$30,000. Realistically, No one can afford that lump sum of money. The author gives a complete explanation on different ways to take care of the expense. Some patients have to pay out of pocket due to the lack of insurance. With interest added, on average, a patient can pay $250 a month for nine years. The author also provides a table showing how the patient can break down the deductible if the patient does have some insurance. He also states some benefits of having the gastric bypass but there’s always a negative after a positive. The financial burden is the biggest issue with the patients deciding whether to get the surgery or not. This has definitely supported the thought I gave out during my thesis. They begin saying how patients experience so much anxiety and depression after living an unhealthy lifestyle. By being overweight, for most obese patients, food was their stress reliever. Sarwar (2005) states, many patients also experience changes in their social scenes, as many American holidays are centered on a big meal. They also share a various examples on how it is hard for new patients to adapt to their diets changes that are expected. Thanksgiving and Christmas, for example, is a family holiday focused mainly on eating dinner. This is a reliable scholarly source.
