“Worthless Days”, the title alone suggest this short story could be about a lot of different things. When the story starts, the author starts with a question or a pun where the author ask “I wonder if I am the only one who suffers from worthless days”. Starting the story this way instantly makes the reader either agree or disagree with the author. This draws the reader in to wonder, “Where is this going?”, whether they agree or not with the initial sentence the curiosity settles in. Now, this dog is running towards her as she explained in the story. I would’ve reacted in the same manner, inside the house. She describes the dog as “shepherd-like, faintly curling tail, long wolfish nose.” The usage of these adjectives describe the dog perfectly to the reader, I can almost picture the dog in my mind. That illustration and word usage was spot on. So, as she continue to observe the dog through a shut door, (brilliant!) she walked out of the door and says it caused a “fireworks of desperate joy”. She was able to reach the owners of the dog as the dog followed her foot to foot. As all of this is going on, her husband and friends are still in the backyard oblivious to the fact there is a strange dog in the house with his

The fur industry has been part of American society even before there was a United States of America. The fur trade likely started when Hudson’s Bay Company was incorporated in 1670 (Dyhouse) and has continued to this day. While fur fashion trends have changed over the years, ranging from felted beaver hats in the mid-19th century, to hats trimmed with whole birds and stuffed kitten heads in the early 20th century, to today’s mink coats, one thing has remained the same; that every piece of fur clothing has come from an animal that was killed for it (Dyhouse). Because of concerns about causing animals to become extinct, furbearing animals have been raised on farms since just after the Civil War (Dyhouse, “Fur Farming in North America”).…

On December 27th, 2007, me and a friend of mine were between 8-9 years old just 2 days after Christmas. We were excited to meet up and show off anything new we were blessed with 2 days prior to the incident. We were at his house playing with WWE action figures until he pulled out a pack of sparklers. This is when the real fun began and one by one we lit up a sparkler, poking holes in stuffed animals and having the irresponsible fun of playing with fire and fireworks. Back as a 9 year old, I thought we had it under control, nothing to be worried about because we knew how to use sparklers.…

Coincidence and the Poor Man’s Fate As his neighbor with a deteriorating mind is pursed by the local police for trespassing into the now-destroyed and abandoned, once-his-home, trailer park community of Times Beach, Missouri, the unnamed narrator “carefully considered both coincidence and fate” (26). The heart of “Book of Songs” by John Dalton struggles with the narrator’s contemplation: it was not a coincidence that detrimental waste oil ended up contaminating a trailer park, yet it was inevitably their fate. The truth this story illustrates is simple: the poor’s earth is valued less, simply because it is the poor who inhabit it.…

Generally speaking, there are two types of people. There are those who are content with their lives, and there are those who are not. Ernest Hemingway delves into a common reason behind many people’s discontent in his short story, “A Clean, Well – Lighted Place.” The story follows an older waiter as he and his younger counterpart serve an old man in the middle of the night. The younger waiter wishes to go home early, but the elder does not mind the time.…

Daystar by Rita Dove includes the use of strong diction and a woman’s point of view to describe the monotonous and tiring life of being both a mother and a wife. The diction is strong without the poem and helps to express both emotional feelings and physical sensations, and the woman’s point of view helps the reader to gain an emotional view and their own stand on what society thinks of women. The use of solid diction in Daystar is imperative to portray the emotional feelings and physical sensations of motherhood and being a wife. The first stanza provides words that create imagery of the main character and her burdensome everyday life, “But she saw diapers steaming on the line, a doll slumped behind the door,” The doll slumped behind the door symbolizes the tired mother who feels like she is a limp and lifeless doll and the steaming diapers are representation of her duties as a mother.…
