I am Gary Yanez Jr., a Hispanic-American college student born in Laredo, Texas. I come from a below average income family who is striving to get the best education out there possible. My family’s blood strives only for the best. In my time in high school, I was really devoted and involved in extracurricular activities. I was part of my high school’s football team for four years. I not only learned how to be physical on the field, but how the game of football teaches us lessons in life. I was very fortunate to be part of our program, it directed me to the young man that I am today. While being a part of this team I earned city and district honorable awards. Academically, at United South High School, based upon my academic status I was honored to be inducted in …show more content…
I feel like it shows how punctual I am to my learning and educational desires. At the moment I am pursuing one of my educational goals to obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. After graduating with my Bachelor’s in Business, I plan to pursue a Master’s of Science in International Logistics. After completing my Masters, I will gain experience in the logistics business world as I slowly branch out into my own business dealing with transportation and logistics. I plan on running a business with my trucking trailers and serving the world by importing and exporting the necessities in today’s world. Around this time I would love to finish my education with a PhD. Most recently, I have served some community service hours at the South Texas Community Food Bank. I assisted by packing several food products in numerous bags to be shipped out for the elderly. I as well helped to disinfect several food products that might have been damaged, or just needed a proper clean up. While helping at the food bank, I realized how many people are in need of this

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

"HUELGA! VIVA LA RAZA!" Cries and shouts of protest could be heard, rumbling the school grounds as Mexican-American students walked out of their homeroom classrooms to join their fellow protesters on the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Students, families, and even teachers held hands and joined one another to proclaim the corruption and racism held in Lincoln High School, along with the many schools part of the L.A. school system. Protesting went on for weeks, blowout after blowout, peaceful protestors who simply wanted their fair share of an education faced with ignorance and violence.…

Roberto Garza Karmisese Mara once said, “The family teaches us about the importance of knowledge, education, hard work, and effort. It teaches us about enjoying ourselves, having fun, keeping it fit and healthy.” Sometimes we forget that our efforts and success begin with our relationships with our families. Roberto Garza, however, does not forget this importance, as he is the physical equivalent of such a striking quotation because he reminds not only himself but also others everywhere that success begins with family, and he inspires young minds throughout numerous communities to live healthy lives both physically and mentally.…

Institutions are recruiting athletes that aren’t mentally prepared for the hardship of college academics. Athletes who are recruited only think on a small scale which is the fact they can continue to play the sport they love and not the actual role of an athlete being a student first. Although, the NCAA and its member institutions tout the collective success and personal development of student-athletes, there is evidence that Black male student-athletes persistently face challenges, limiting their ability to achieve academic and personal success (Baker & Hawkins, 2016). As one glaring example of the potential impact of social support on the matriculation and experience of Black student-athletes, it is also necessary to acknowledge that social…

Football pushed students to excel and become self disciplined. Children learn how to practice on their own and tricks to improve. Children also are more respectful of adults because of the mentality of the coach to athlete relationship. Ultimately, football pushed young people to do better in school, become more self disciplined, and more well-rounded people, all of which will help them later in life. Football goes far beyond men in uniforms throwing a ball back and forth.…

The adrenaline, hearing the crowd cheering, scoring touchdowns; it a rush that goes through my veins and I cannot get enough of it. I would play because I enjoyed it, but I had no idea how the simple game of football would change my life for the better. Growing up I used to see my friends come home from little league practice everyday on school days and that really used to make me mad. They used to get home when the street lights were on and we were not able to come outside and play at that time.…
