A few years ago, I stumbled upon the poem Look Up. The Author Gary Turk explains that with social media “We edit and exaggerate, crave adulation. We pretend not to notice the social isolation. We put our words into order and turn our lives a-glistening. We don’t even know if anyone is listening!” This poem illuminates many of the challenges that the authors of this week’s readings highlight. Like much that we have studied this course, social media and the internet has both benefits and drawbacks. It can unite continents, isolate us, educate populations, or radicalize and justify people’s actions/beliefs. It is all in how we utilize it.
