One common use of Cryotherapy is done through an ice message. This modality uses conduction to transfer energy from the ice to the target tissues (Denegar, C. R. et. al 2006; Herrera, E. et. al, 2010). Ice message is normally given with a 6-ounce frozen block of ice in a cup. This Cryotherapy is applied in continuous circles around the area being treated (Love, H. N. et. al, 2013; Dykstra, J. H. et. al 2009). Ice massages normally produce an average temperature to cool skin about ten degrees Celsius colder when compared to ice bags and cold water immersions. It has also been shown to have a lesser amount of altered sensation prior to being numb (Love, H. N. et. al, 2013; Howatson, G., et. al 2005). This means that the patients will get through intense cold, aching pain, and pins/needles quicker when using ice message when compared to treatments such as cold-water immersion and ice bag application. Although, it is very important to know that the time after treatment in which the tissue stays cold after administering ice message is significantly shorter when compared to other forms of Cryotherapy treatments (Love, H. N. et. al, 2013; Dykstra, J. H. et. al …show more content…
Cryotherapy, like ice message, uses conduction as its mode of transferring energy (Denegar, C. R. et. al 2006; Herrera, E. et. al, 2010). It is so commonly used because it is often the most easily administrated, it is cheap, allows athletes to do other things will doing Cryotherapy, and is portable. Ice bags are commonly made with crushed ice, but can also be made with other forms of ice. After the ice is in the plastic bag all of the excess air is taken out of it and then it is tied shut will the least about of air possible inside (Love, H. N. et. al, 2013; Dykstra, J. H. et. al 2009). This is down to increase the surface area of ice that will be in contact with the patient. The ice bag can be just placed on the patient or elastic wrap can be used to secure the wrap to the patient. When being treated with an ice bag most will not feel the sensation of numbness until about 10 minutes (Love, H. N. et. al, 2013). Ice bags are a great Cryotherapy to be used if you are looking for longer-term effects of the treatment. This is because the tissues being treated will stay colder longer than other types of Cryotherapy, like ice message. When looking at treatment time for Cryotherapy it can range over a very wide span of time. The most commonly clinically accepted times that are used are anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes (Herrera, E. et. al, 2010). There is a very great debate for all the Cryotherapies about what the actual
