What Makes Super Man So Darned American? Gary Engle’s essay “What Makes Super Man So Darned American” explains that super man is a hero regardless not being an American. I agree because superman stands for the America dream, belief system, religious myths and the importance of immigration to America. Superman is so darned American because he is an immigrant from a different planet to earth, to the United States for that matter. He has many characteristics that are similar to that of other immigrants. In order to fit into the American society, he had to adjust to the norms and culture. Humans are known to be a weakling who needs someone to fight for their belief system. For example, Engle said “Lois proves worthy of him by falling in love with a weakling.” Furthermore, superman is an un compromise alien even though he had to assimilate in other to blend into the American society; he doesn’t give up who he is. He wears green colored costumes and still uses his super natural powers to help people. He fought for fairness, justice and freedom just like Martin L King fought for freedom. Superman being an orphan, he had to rise above, that is starting from the bottom to the top (from rags to riches). Many immigrants had to work their way up to riches. Andrew Carnegie is a good example of an immigrant who rose from “rags to riches”. He immigrated to the united stated with his family as a telegrapher. Through the income he made he invested into stuff like steel, oil, and railroads, which fetched him a lot of income to start his own company. Although not every immigrant turns out to be like Carnegie, people immigrate to America to start up a new life and to prosper. Engle said “ potent symbol of the American character. Orphans aren’t merely here to reinvent themselves. They are obliged to do so.” However, individual mobility stands out as an American dream and it goes back to talk about immigration and how people moved to America to achieve their goals. Superman doesn’t have to worry about mobility because he can be anywhere, anytime, whenever. Superman’s ability to fly portrays hi as god like and he is compared to the Greek messenger god Hermes or Zetes the flying
