For this project I observed the head coach for Garland High School’s cross country team. Coach Lynn Duyck is coaching for her 35th year the girl’s varsity and junior varsity cross country team. She has a total of 36 runners, 10 who are varsity and 26 who are junior varsity. The runners are between the ages 14-18. Her fastest runner Gemma is a freshman, following her is Isabelle who is a senior. This week is very important for the team on Saturday they will be running in the district meet. The goal for this meet is to place #1 in the district and qualify for regionals. In addition to their big meet, this week is homecoming week for Garland high school. The most common was General communication. She used this behavior before and after the run for a total of five times. This accounted for 7% of her behavior. Coach Duyck loves cross country and she loves wining but she loves her runner more than anything. She had a one on one conversation with one of her runners who has been missing practice due to family issues. She didn’t pull the runner aside to punish her for not showing up but to talk and see how she could help the runner get through the rough patch. Due to the recent deaths in the school, she expressed to the team how much she cares about their safety. During her closing pep talk she explained to the team the importance of running, she never mentioned winning she mentioned the life lessons that running could teach the girls. Her goal is to teach the girls to never quit. No matter how far your goal is or how much it hurts, don’t quit. Because when life get hard I never want you to quit. Organization was used 4 times too, for 7% of her behaviors. A way that Coach used organization in her coaching was that she would assign one faster runner as the goal. The top 5 runners had to try to catch the first runner. She assigned the runner goals realistically, by giving them a runner that was ahead but not too
