Gardner Calvin Taylor was conceived on June 18, 1918, in Baton Rouge, La., to the Rev. Washington M. furthermore and Selena Taylor. His dad, conceived in 1870 to liberated slaves, was a Baptist minister and passed on when Gardner was 13. He was raised by his mom, who was an instructor. He went to isolated schools and experienced his childhood in a city so focused on keeping races separated it showered pesticides to murder mosquitoes just in white neighborhoods, stopping at the edge of black areas. He wanted to be a civil right's lawyer, although no dark individual had ever been admitted to the Louisiana bar. When he was 19, he survived a car accident that left two white men dead.
