Gardener Vs Time Traveler

There are many beautiful sculptures at the University of Toledo, it was hard for me to pick two to discuss. The thing that makes all of the sculptures different is that they were all given or made for different reasons. Some were given in contribution to professors, some made by professors or students, and some given just to contribute to the beauty of the University’s campus. The University of Toledo has such a beautiful campus, and it is all due to these wonderful sculptures around Centennial Mall. The two sculptures that I chose to write about are The Gardener and Time Traveler. Even though The Gardener and Time Traveler are very different in concept and design, they both contribute to the beautification of Toledo’s campus perfectly.

This type of art is mainly abstract, which makes it more interesting in my case. Time Traveler was sculpted by Thomas Lingeman, the professor of Art at the University of Toledo. The model was a gift from the estate of Milford Martin Romanoff. Romanoff was a part of the very first campus beautification committee. The sculpture rests in the somewhat middle of Centennial Mall, which is astonishing because Milton was instrumental in the design of the Mall. This art speaks to me personally because one of the main reasons I came to the University of Toledo was the beautiful campus, especially the mall. The meaning of this piece in my words, is that the world is always evolving. When you first look at Time Traveler, the name makes perfect sense because it gives off a very futuristic …show more content…
The meanings of the pieces are completely different, The Gardener is very rustic and looks back on a time where there wasn’t big cities and suburbs. Time Traveler looks forwards instead of backwards, on how the world is always changing. The value of both of these sculptures go in with the meanings. The Gardener’s value is to show what we came from, the farmlands of Northwest Ohio. Time Traveler’s value is again the complete opposite; it shows where we are going to be in the next ten years. It shows how art is going to be and how architecture is going to change. Another difference is that even though they both have something to do with university professors, Time Traveler was actually made by a professor. The Gardener was made by an artist and it honors a professor.
The University of Toledo is a spectacular place for art to thrive. The many different types and pieces show it very well. My two different pieces mean very much to me, they were the first things I saw when I visited here last year, the first things seen on my first day of college, and the pieces that I will see for the next four years. That is the best thing about art, it stays the same no matter how many years go by. Even though Time Traveler and The Gardener are very different in both concept and design, they picture the campus beauty

Assignment Four – The Family Group by Charles Umlauf Charles Umlauf created The Family Group sculpture in 1960. The location of the sculpture is outside of the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. Its green color distinguishes the sculpture from the many other sculptures around the university and from the background of the business school. Much of the evidence in the paper will come from the structure and form of the sculpture. The sculpture depicts a woman leaning on her husband showing a traditional family structure.…

Jennifer Le Arts-1301-85402 It was a rainy Saturday when I went to the Dallas Museum of Art where I first encountered the enormous steel sculpture Ave by Mark Di Suvero, which could be an artwork for commemoration and serves as a recognizable icon for citizens to demonstrate that the building next to it as an art museum. The abstract sculpture rested on the large grassy area where the bright red steel complimented the green grass that stood next to the light gray museum. The contemporary sculpture significantly covers a large portion of the lawn and thus may represent a public figurehead to the building itself. Unfortunately because of the rainy weather, the sculpture garden was closed but I hope to revisit the museum again for that exhibit.…

As we’ve discussed heavily in class, as time goes on, new innovations are created in our history as people and cultures progress through the years. We’ve looked at objects and ideas that have seen advancements whether due to technology, or an advancement in thinking. This remains true when looking through forms of art and looking at Christian Schussele’s Men of Progress in 1862, and Edward Sorel’s People of Progress crafted in 1999. From a very basic visual perspective, there is a stark contrast between the two works of art. Both forms are done with oil on canvas, but are visually different.…

The garden’s future statue, The Veiled and Masked Dancer, will not only correlate perfectly with its surroundings, but it will also add immensely to its historical value because of its unparalleled authenticity. In the Hellenistic era, the process of making sculptures out of bronze produced gorgeous works of art, yet few from this time period remain today. This statue was so intricately sculpted with each detail and has still been preserved over time, increasing its worth exponentially. The statue would be placed atop the main entrance archway with vines and flowers to create a welcoming impression to all visitors. The eye-catching presentation of the statue will evoke a serene feeling to visitors, making this display an unbeatable choice…

    Newgrange Art

The first piece of art that I have decided to discuss is a prehistoric monument in Ireland called Newgrange. It was built during the Neolithic period around 3000 BC to 2500 BC, making it older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. The Newgrange monument primarily consists of a large mound, built of alternating layers of earth and stones, with grass growing on top and a reconstructed facade of flattish white quartz stones studded at intervals with large rounded cobbles covering part of the circumference. Situated around the perimeter of the mound is a circle of standing stones, which most archaeologists regard as having been added later, during the Bronze Age, centuries after the original monument had been abandoned as a tomb. Newgrange…

It sways and it comforts, it instills fear and it excites. No matter what art has been used in, one thing that is clear is that art was meant to send a message not just to people in the present, but to the children of the future. Whether it be political propaganda to give an idea of an ancient civilization’s culture or to show a fellow hunter how to ensnare an animal for food, art, whether it be through images or groups of symbols named words, was made to help man and civilization survive. Human beings cannot see into the future, it’s a thick black void that cannot be unveiled until it is already too late. The uncertainty is a great fear amongst many.…

As time passes, so does the trends of different arts and culture. Part of why ancient art is so fascinating is the fact that art today is different in so many ways than all arts before; therefore making the incredible ancient pieces so intriguing. Along with time, every different civilization interprets and executes art differently, aiding in the immense diversity we see. From approximately 1400 BCE to 460 BCE, several different civilizations were taking control over the Near East, thus bringing their own aesthetic to the arts. In addition to these novel and ever changing aesthetics, the art and architecture was also affected by the civilizations coming before them.…
