I. Introduction

I.I BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Garden Court was established on -- -- 1971 in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. It is located in the upmarket, central district of Bole. A family-owned restaurant, The Garden Court employs 13 workers who run a designated restaurant area, bar, and coffee area. It is one of the company’s many subsidiaries under the ownership of Bekele Molla Hotels, which includes hotel chains along the Ethiopia’s rift valley, Hebir Ethiopia Cultural Restaurant, as well as The Obelisk (a bar and lounge in Bole International Airport).

I.II Problem

In spite of the fact that business is currently going well at The Garden Court, And despite the restaurant’s eminence in the industry, the last few years have been rather difficult due to infrastructure development and road construction around the area.

Whilst the history of the company has played an integral role in the painting of this image, the company’s on-going participation in various CSR activities such as National Hand Washing Day have fortified its image. Additionally having been established XX years ago, The Garden Court has remained a recognized figure in the area. The central location of Bole makes it an ideal location due to high traffic, which is helped by the restaurant’s considerably lower pricing in comparison with other restaurants within the district. These strengths offer the Garden Court competitive edge. Furthermore, the emerging hospitality market provides a real opportunity, as certain people’s spending power increases. However, as the interviews revealed, the unproductive and demotivated workforce, who are essential in the service sector, are a hindrance to the business.
