The subjects were all overweight, with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or higher and aged between 25 and 60. All 43 women were stable in their diets, had stable body weight and exercising habits over the last 3 months prior to the treatment. None of the participants were ill and they were all relatively healthy. None of them were taking any weight loss, appetite or glucose level control drugs prior to or during the study. Participants who smoked, had an illness like liver dysfunction and untreated high blood pressure or were pregnant were excluded from the study. The treatment for the study took place over a period of 60 days. It was a double-blind randomized study in which daily doses of garcinia cambogia extract in the form of capsules were given to 30 participants three times a day before meals over the 60-day period. The rest of the participants (13) were given placebo capsules, which contained mainly corn starch and magnesium. All 43 participants were asked to maintain consistent with their daily exercise routine, and all of them received dietary plans which aimed to reduce their calorie intake by 500 calories per day during the treatment. Nutritional, clinical and drug intake was reported by the participants themselves. Participants’ BMI, weight and height were accurately measured by up-to date equipment. Blood samples were …show more content…
Although some women who took the capsules containing the garcinia cambogia extract did report side effects such as nausea and dizziness, there was no change on the chemical levels of their bodies. There was little to no change in BMI, FFM, FM, REE, Waist/Hip ratio (WHR) and Respiratory Quotient (RQ) between the participants who took the extract and those who took the placebo capsules before and after the 60 days. Total Cholesterol (TC) in blood was reduced after the 60-day treatment, but the most significant change between the two groups was the triglycerides (TG), which are types of fat found in the blood. It is important to note that although there was a significant reduction in TG for women treated with gracinia cambogia, the findings and results of the study did not support the hypothesis that gracinia cambogia is effective in weight reduction and control. In fact, the study showed that participants treated with the extract were higher in BMI and FFM than those treated with the placebo after the 60
