Garadan’s Fall

“I’m late!” Jake is driving through the streets. It is another day in Garadan, the last community known to man. Jake is on his way to Town Hall, the center and the brain of Garadan. Jake works in the schedule department of Town Hall. There, he designs the schedules for each and every one of Garadan’s citizens. Jake was assigned this job three days ago. Garadan is ruled by the government. There are three main laws, no adventure, no fun, no love, only work eat and sleep.

The rest of the action is delivered to Jake in the form of newspapers. One person was touched by his speech, and believes that Garadan must come to an end. This leader gathers the people, and a war breaks out. Many are injured, but in the end, the Garadanians win. This dystopian society is brought to an end. This one leader then frees Jake from jail.
“Who are you?”
“Im Hank, a big follower…”
“Were you the one who lead the community?”
“Yup. By the way, great speech.”
“Thanks, took me all night to write it. So, is the community free? Has Garadan fallen?”
“Yeah, Everyone is recovering, and some of us have clean up duty.”
After the mess is cleaned up, Jake and Hank lead the people and tell them that they are going to go camping. The people are living normal lives now, and doing all sorts of fun things.
Jake learns that he needs to stand up for what is right, and that if there is a problem, and no one stands up to it, you could be the one who does.

In “The Sun Also Rises” Hemingway introduces his novel with two quotes. The first is a quote from Gertrude Stein, a painter, poet, who was at the center of the social scene of American expatriates in the 1920s Paris. She identifies that Hemingway’s is “lost generation.” This term characterizes the emotional, moral and in many cases physical emptiness of the post-WWI generation, that witnessed the bloodiest and deadliest times known to man, to this point in history. This “lost generation” sought comfort in the decadent, carefree times of the roaring 1920s where alcohol was at the epicenter.…

From January of 1933- May 1945 Adolf Hitler started the Holocaust in Germany, convincing a whole nation that one race was the cause of all their problems. He was able to get his soldiers to murder approximately six million people simply because they strongly believed this was their duty to help their country succeed. He was also able to do this because people who knew better stayed silent because they chose to ignore the problem rather than get involved. This is just one example throughout history of how strongly people can feel about their political views, as well as how some people can remain completely uninvolved. In The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers, Jake represents the passion for the socialist movement during this time…

The characters in The Sun Also Rises are all in search of something after World War I. Travel plays a part as one of the major themes, with countries such as France and Spain being countries that Jake, Robert, and Brett explore. It can be argued that these three main characters are trying to escape their issues by drinking and escaping to different countries to get a new start. However, Ernest Hemingway’s theory is that, “Writing is like an iceberg. 1/8 of the information is above the surface, and 7/8 is below the surface.” Jake, Robert, and Brett’s drinking and escapist issues are what is above the surface.…

The story begins with the description of the ‘sad city’ (’the saddest of cities, a city so ruinously sad that it had forgotten its name’) where lived 'Haroun' together with his father, the well-known storyteller 'Rashid', ‘whose cheerfulness was famous throughout that unhappy metropolis’ and his mother, 'Soraya', who then runs off with their neighbor, ‘Mr. Sengupta’. Thereafter Haroun finds it impossible to concentrate on one thing for more than 11 minutes (his mother left at 11 o’clock), and Rashid loses his ability to tell stories because of Haroun’s harsh words . After being hired by the local politicians ('Snooty Buttoo') the storyteller and Haroun spends the night at the so-called Arabian Nights Plus One houseboat, where the young boy…
