Gap Year Ethos

Decent Essays
I would appeal to ethos to try to persuade my skeptical parents that a gap year will be beneficial by having a parent of a person who had taken a gap year speak to my parents about any concerns that they may have about me taking a year off. Also, I would arrange a meeting with my high school principal so that my parents can talk to a school official and ask any questions they may have.
I would appeal to logos to try to persuade my skeptical parents that a gap year will be beneficial by showing them the results of students who passed their classes that took a gap year compared to students who did not take a gap year. Also, I would make a chart or graph with statistics that show taking a gap year is beneficial for me.

“Homeless on Campus” In the magazine article “Homeless on Campus”, Bader uses pathos and ethos to help inform the audience about the plight of homeless college students, and bring them to attention. The article was mainly directed at college administrators and educators, and secondly to people who worked in financial aid. For the college administrators and educators, this would help bring attention to their homeless and poverty ridden students and to persuade them to do more to help them out. For the financial aid advisors, it would convince them to provide more options and opportunities for these students.…

For my persuasive essay I would discuss my reasoning on why I believe the drinking age should be raised to 25. There are too many incidents involving alcohol and young adults. If the drinking age was 25 it would decrease the chances of engaging in unprotected sex, driving while intoxicated, and overall it would minimize the amount of bad choices made among young adults. The brain isn’t fully mature until the age of 25 which means that the decision making part of our brain isn’t fully developed before then. In order to prevent drunk young adults from making bad choices they should refrain from drinking until their brain is fully matured.…

My position in student government has always asked me to think critically and creatively. In ASB, associated student body, we create events, dances, and pep rallies for students in the school to enjoy. I have been in ASB since 9th grade and I have always been a dedicated member. I was applied for ASB as class president and was elected by my class to that position. I held the position for two years and then became a director of extracurricular activities for one year.…

If I could go back to the past and talk to myself in September 2013, I would tell my younger self to be prepared for the next four years. I would advise myself to plan out my work and actually do assignments ahead of time instead of putting them off until nine o'clock the night before they were due. I would tell myself to not take honors trig because it was too much to handle combined with all of my other classes, as well as saying, that just because it was recommended to take a class, it doesn't mean I should've. I would recommend actually trying to do the workouts for field hockey before preseason. That way it wouldn't be so bad in the future.…

The campus issue I chose to focus on is student retention and how it correlates with the socio-economic status of the student. I chose this topic and study group because it is very closely related to the field I currently work in, and I can get some hand on experiences while working through this semester. I currently work for the Student Success and Persistence department where we work towards helping student retention campus wide for first year college students. Since I work at a community college a vast majority of our students are nontraditional and are not straight out of high school. I feel this will be a great learning experience for me in this course, and in the professional field.…

Senior year might be the most effort I ever put into my education, as I received a 4.0 throughout my last year in high school. This brought my accumulative GPA up so high that I was able to apply for Portland State University and get accepted. One prominent resource that I have took advantage of was scholarships, specifically for Latinos.…

Three years elapsed, and with those years gone, so were my hardships. The start of my fourth year marked the turning point for me and what made my final year in high school a memorable one. Unlike the years prior where my opinion didn’t matter, my senior year was when I was finally recognized and praised for my abilities. I felt like I was an asset to the team rather than someone who was just taking up space. I was given first priority when the time had come to pick numbers.…

Why Your Child Should Take a Gap Year In Europe“1.2 percent of U.S. college freshmen deferred admission to take a gap year in 2011” (Baker). A gap year is a year that a student takes between finishing high school and starting university. This year can be used for whatever a student wants it to be used for, whether that be fishing on a trawler in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, digging wells and erecting schools in South Sudan, or maybe farming in Nebraska, the choice is theirs. Many studies have shown that gap years create cultured, well rounded and more academically motivated students. America needs young graduates right now, this is common knowledge.…

Skipping school for an entire year? Sounds too good to be true, but it is true. This phenomenon is called a gap year which defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is “a one-year hiatus from academic studies to allow for non-academic activities.” Many European countries are doing this method, where students take a year break after graduating high school but before college to give themselves time to do what they please without the anxiety and stress of academics. The Gap Year is a great solution for students to figure out exactly what they would like their future to be, and get an idea of the real world.…

Not all students can deal with intense work that requires a copious amount of time and energy throughout the year. Having a gap year allows students to also do other activities without being worried about taking a test or completing a book report the next day. Taking a year off is also a perfect opportunity to explore the world and meet new friends, especially if it involves with a career that the student is interested in. Internships will be provided for a wide variety of career positions and becoming an intern would help understand what really goes on when performing the job. For people who disagree, a person would mention that some students might abuse that year of opportunity and use the gap year as a vacation.…
