When analyzing the WSCC model in the RHS population, a strength of the model is that it aligns philosophically with the RHS Health Resource Center (new school-based clinic at the high school) leadership team by providing a public facility to address community members’ health concerns in an easily accessible public building. The Health Resource Center aligns with the model components because it is free of charge, provides full medical care, has bilingual health professionals, accesses Telemental health on Thursdays and has hours of operation that are amenable to high school students. Additionally, the principal of the high school is fully on board and willing to lead her school to help students to be healthy and academically successful, …show more content…
Some see the Health Resource Center as an asset to help students at RHS to become active participants in their own health while others feel that health care should be provided at a doctor’s office after school hours. Additionally, if the Health Resource Center is not used, the Park Nicollet Foundation may discontinue funding the program. In light of these weaknesses and threats, I propose several opportunities and model modifications. Such improvements will strengthen the WSCC model for RHS and help those who implement the model to be successful. First, the WSCC model component one, Health Education, should be modified to include faculty buy-in with the incorporation of a faculty leader who joins the Health Resource Center leadership team. Faculty members are valuable assets to ensure the success of students and to provide training to their peers so that functional health instruction can be incorporated in an appropriate and seamless manner. This faculty can direct staff education that is specific to the RHS student population and help to guide curriculum working with the faculty curriculum committee. Because the 10 components of the WSCC model may be a daunting task for a school to implement, the lead faculty with the support of the school based clinic staff and school nurse would have the time they need to conduct a needs assessment to identify which components are critical for setting up a healthy school both academically and health promotionally (?) and which components can be combined to share resources such as integrating the physical activity /education and health education because these areas are often under the same umbrella in a curriculum setting. Another opportunity is the lack of electronic health care records. In order for health engagement to occur with the broader community, sharing of records
