From the short story "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall" Ganny is a woman that is a survivor. While on her death bed she prides herself on her strength, mothering skills, and ability to single handled run a household. With the death of her late husband, she takes on the role of both mother and father to her children. She did the cooking and cleaning as well as pay bills and dig post holes. Her last name gives meaning to her life, she has weathers many hardships and never gave up. Furthermore, while dying she believes she will overcome this because she has been worse in the past. When her children treat her like a child it troubles her because she sees herself as a strong independent woman.
