The movie Gangs of New York, takes place in a neighborhood in lower Manhattan. The movie deals with the immigration of many Irish to New York as a result; gangs are created which are in favor and against the Irish. At the same time this takes place, Lincoln has made the first draft of the country in order to fight in the civil war and free slaves. The movie opening scene begins with a battle in 1846 between a Native gang lead by Bill “The Butcher” and a Irish gang who’s leader is Vallon (main character) father. The battle begins and Vallon sees the butcher kill his father. Vallon full of anger and hate is sent away for sixteen years and comes back to the town to do one thing, kill his father killer. On his return, Vallon sees how the butcher has control of the five points and many allies of his father have become associates of the butcher. The butcher saw Vallon as a son and Vallon had hidden feelings for him, Vallon even save his life. The whole story was happening while the first draft was taking place, people were scared and refusing to go to their death, which increase violence at this period of time. The whole story took a turn when Vallon and Jenny were together and Vallon’s friend Jack (had feelings for Jenny for a long time) saw the two together. As an impulse of anger and madness, Jack confess the truth about Vallon too the butcher. The butcher and Vallon have a confrontment and the butcher humiliates and marks Vallon with a burning knife but yet does not kill him. Jenny helps Vallon recuperate and has a plan to run away to San Francisco with him. This conflict help Vallon realize his true identity and gain courage to begin the fight against the butcher. Elections were happening at this time, a candidate name Tweed made an agreement with Vallon to put an Irish men as sheriff if he had the Irish
